LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 13th-ranked Coe College wrestling team went 2-2 Monday at the Desert Duals, picking up wins over Manchester and Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Coe opened the day with a 32-15 victory over Manchester. At 125 pounds, Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) gave Coe a 5-0 lead with a 21-5 technical fall against Alan Mock. Fletcher Green (Washington, Iowa/Washington) followed at 133 pounds with a 7-5 win in sudden victory against Ben Cauffman. The Spartans won the next three matches, taking a 15-8 lead on the Kohawks. Bryce Scott (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) improved to 13-4 on the year, as he beat Tristan Wilson 14-13 at 165 pounds. Jake Voss (Ryan, Iowa/West Delaware) gave Coe the lead for good at 174 pounds, as he pinned Isac Ray in 2:42. Taylor Mehmen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) followed with an 18-6 major decision against Alex Roberts at 184 pounds. Andrew Holladay (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) won by technical fall (16-0) at 197 pounds before Brennan Koerperich (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) won by fall in 1:40 at heavyweight against Tristan Choate, as he improved to 14-5 on the year.
In the next dual, Coe beat Wisconsin-Oshkosh 29-9. Brady Wilsie (Byron, Ill./Byron) started things with a 13-1 major decision against Ethan Attabet, as he improved to 11-1 on the year. At 133 pounds, Brady Ruden (Wilton, Iowa/Wilton) was a 5-2 winner over Reiss Bielski. Sam Uthoff (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) picked up a win by fall at 141 pounds in 1:29 against Dellas Vandenberg. The Kohawks won five-straight matches after the Titans cut the lead to 12-3, starting with a 6-4 decision by Cody Fritz (Solon, Iowa/Solon) at 157 pounds against Mark Choinski. At 165 pounds, second-ranked Ryan Harrington (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) beat Aristide Serrano 5-0. Voss was a 10-3 winner over Colten Cashmore at 174 pounds, while Josh Edel (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) beat Patrick Reilly 9-2 at 184 pounds. Coe's final win came at 197 pounds, as Holladay won by major decision 14-1 against John DePersia.
The Kohawks suffered a 27-16 loss to Cal Baptist, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II. Rosenberg earned six points for the Kohawks via forfeit, as he won his sixth-straight match at 125 pounds. Cal Baptist was up 11-6 when Nate Olsen won by 10-0 major decision against Jacob Cooper at 157 pounds. Harrington was a 7-3 winner over Dominic Kincaid at 165 pounds. Coe's final win came from Voss at 174 pounds, as he beat Austin Klient 7-1.
In the final match of the day, Coe took seventh-ranked Concordia to the wire before losing the final match via forfeit in a 25-19 loss to the Cobbers. Ruden earned Coe's first win at 133 pounds, as he pinned Aaron Dick in 1:45. The Kohawks trailed 19-6 when Voss beat Jake Johnson by 14-4 major decision at 174 pounds. Voss' victory was his 17th-straight, as he ran his record to 18-1 on the year with his 30th career win. Mehmen picked up a big fall over ninth-ranked Ricky Briggs in 3:00 at 184 pounds, as he improved to 15-4 on the year. Holladay tied the match with a 7-2 win over Jacob Briggs at 197 pounds, as Holladay ran his record to 15-5 on the season.
The Kohawks (3-3, 1-1 IIAC) return to action on Jan. 5, as they participate in the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
