CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After a back-and-forth first half, Wisconsin-Oshkosh used a 14-3 run early in the second half to pull away for an 89-66 win over Coe College.
The Titans scored the first two baskets of the game, but a 3-pointer by Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) sparked an 8-0 run by the Kohawks in less than a minute, as Coe took an 8-4 lead on a layup from Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 17:30 to play in the opening half. A pair of free throws by Ben Boots with 17:16 to play in the first half started a 14-6 run by the Titans in the next 4:17, as a layup by Brett Wittchow with 12:59 left in the half gave the Titans an 18-14 lead.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh pushed the lead to seven with 11:40 to play, but Coe outscored the Titans 15-7 in the next 5:30, taking a 31-30 lead on a 3-pointer by Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) with 5:52 to play in the opening half. The Titans countered with an 11-5 run in the next 2:26, taking a five-point lead with 3:11 to play in the half. A layup by Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) with :06 left cut the lead to 44-43, but Charlie Noone hit a 3-pointer from eight feet behind the line at the buzzer, as the Titans led 47-43 at the break.
Meyer hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, but the Titans outscored Coe 14-3 in the next 5:08, taking a 61-49 lead with 13:23 to play. Coe cut the lead to nine with 12:36 to play, but 11-straight points from the Titans in the next 2:44 pushed the lead to 20. The Titans would later use a 10-1 run, taking an 86-59 lead with 1:44 to play. Coe scored seven of the final 10 points, leaving the Titans with the 89-66 victory.
The Titans, coached by former Coe Head Coach Pat Juckem, were 28-of-51 (54.9%) from the field and 13-of-21 (61.9%) from downtown. Coe was 20-of-44 (45.5%) from the field and 12-of-23 (52.2%) beyond the arc. The Titans were 20-of-23 (87%) at the free throw line, while Coe was 14-of-20 (70%) at the charity stripe. The Titans held a 10-2 advantage in second chance points and 22-12 advantage in the paint.
Timp led the Kohawks with 13 points, while Shedeck and Meyer joined him in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) had eight points, while Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) had seven. Timp and Shedeck each had three rebounds. Haaland had a game-high five assists, while Meyer had two. Haaland also had a pair of steals.
The Kohawks (5-5) return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Wisconsin-La Crosse (7-3). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis. A link to live video and stats will be available at CoeAthletics.com.
