LA CROSSE, Wis. - Wisconsin-La Crosse opened the second half on a 14-2 run, as the Eagles beat Coe College 74-67 Saturday at Mitchell Hall.
Coe held an early 9-4 lead in the first 3:50 of the game. The Eagles cut the lead to one on a layup by Austin Fritz with 10:56 to play in the opening half. Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) hit a pair of free throws with 9:36 to play in the half, as Coe went on an 11-3 run in the next 2:41. A free throw by Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) with 6:55 to play in the half gave Coe a 26-17 lead, its largest of the game. The Eagles went on a 17-7 run in the next 6:06 before Timp hit a free throw with :01 left in the half to tie the game at 34-34 at the break.
The Eagles scored the first eight points of the second half en route to a 14-2 run in the first 6:04. A layup by Kenny Finco gave the Eagles a 48-36 lead with 13:56 to play. With 13:17 to play, Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) hit a 3-pointer, as Coe scored six-straight points to cut the lead to six with 12:04 to play. Wisconsin-La Crosse answered with a 10-3 run in the next 2:23, pushing the lead to 13 with 8:57 to play on a layup by Ben Meinholz. With the lead at 11, Timp hit a jumper with 5:58 to play, as Coe went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 63-59 with 2:47 to play. Coe couldn't get any closer, as the Eagles held on for the 74-67 victory.
Coe was 24-of-48 from the floor and 9-of-20 (45%) from downtown. The Kohawks were 10-of-19 (52.6%) from the free throw line. Wisconsin-La Crosse was 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the field and 4-of-13 (30.8%) from 3-point range. The Eagles were 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the charity stripe. Wisconsin-La Crosse outscored Coe 44-26 in the paint and 24-14 off turnovers.
Three Kohawks scored in double figures, led by Timp's 16 points. Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) had 15 points, while Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) added 14. Timp had his first career double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Vonderhaar had nine boards, while Shedeck added four. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) had a game-high six assists, while Shedeck had three and Vonderhaar had a pair. Timp also had three steals.
The Kohawks (5-6, 2-1 IIAC) return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Dubuque (4-7, 1-2 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Dubuque. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
