DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque started the second half on a 21-4 run in the first 8:13, as the Spartans beat Coe College 78-64 Wednesday night.
Coe jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the first 4:55. Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) tied the game at 18 with 9:15 to play on a layup. Dubuque answered with a 10-2 run in the next 4:21, taking a 28-20 lead on a layup by Jacob Mohlis with 3:19 left in the half. The Kohawks cut the lead back to four with 1:11 left in the half, but a layup with :56 left in the half and a 3-pointer by Jamaree Atwater with :04 left gave the Spartans a 35-26 lead at the break.
The Spartans opened the second half on a 21-4 run in the first 8:13, taking a 56-30 lead on a 3-pointer by Jalen Jackson with 11:47 to play. Coe was held to just one basket, a layup by Shedeck, during the run. Coe was unable to get the lead under 20 until the final minutes. Coe closed the game on a 13-7 run, leaving Dubuque with a 78-64 victory.
Coe was 23-of-53 (43.4%) from the field and 8-of-22 (36.4%) from downtown. The Spartans were 30-of-55 (54.5%) from the floor and 7-of-21 from 3-point range. The Kohawks were 10-of-17 (58.8%) at the free throw line, while the Spartans were 11-of-16 (68.8%) at the stripe.
Shedeck led the Kohawks with 17 points, while Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) had nine. Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) had eight points, while Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) and Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) each had seven. Shedeck had nine rebounds, while Timp and Vonderhaar each had five boards. Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier), Haaland and Timp each had a pair of assists.
