FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Coe College wrestling team, ranked 12th in the nation, went 2-1 on the final day of the NWCA National Duals, as the Kohawks placed seventh.
The Kohawks opened the day with a 24-22 win against seventh-ranked Wabash. Coe got a big start, as Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) won by fall in 3:00 against Chris Diaz at 125 pounds. The Kohawks held a 6-3 lead into the 141 pounds match before Levi Azinger (Pella, Iowa/Pella) beat Brice Everson 7-5, giving Coe a 9-3 lead. The Little Giants held a 16-9 lead going into the 174 pound match before ninth-ranked Jake Voss (Ryan, Iowa/West Delaware) won by 17-0 technical fall against Darden Schurg. With Coe down by two, Taylor Mehmen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) won by fall against Nick Fox in 4:40, giving the Kohawks a 20-16 lead. Wabash picked up a fall at 197 pounds, but Coe countered with a win from Andrew Holladay (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at heavyweight, as he beat Sam Hipple by 15-2 major decision. The victory by Holladay gave Coe a 24-22 victory.
In the consolation semifinals, 15th-ranked Baldwin Wallace beat Coe 25-10. The Yellow Jackets won the first three matches, taking a 9-0 lead. John Clymer was a 9-3 winner over Zach Taylor at 149 pounds before Cody Fritz (Solon, Iowa/Solon) beat Richard Burke by 12-1 major decision at 157 pounds, as Coe cut the lead to 9-7. At 174 pounds, Voss cut the lead to 15-10 with a 6-3 decision over Graham Montague. The Yellow Jackets won the final three matches for the victory.
The Kohawks faced 22nd-ranked Ferrum in the seventh-place match. Both teams won five matches, but a technical fall for the Kohawks gave Coe the 17-16 edge. At 125 pounds, Rosenberg improved to 15-6 on the year with a 7-4 win over Bailey Cooper. Azinger gave the Kohawks a 6-3 lead with a 6-0 decision over Austin Smith at 141 pounds. Entering the 165 pound match, the Kohawks trailed 10-6 before Bryce Scott (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) picked up a 14-9 decision against Andrew Tolbert. Scott improved to 15-5 with the win.
At 174 pounds, Voss earned a 9-5 decision against Blake Rosenbaum, as Voss improved to 22-2 on the season. The victory by Voss gave Coe a 12-10 lead. The final victory for the Kohawks came at 184 pounds, as Mehmen earned a 19-3 technical fall against Max Baker. Mehmen improved to 19-5 with the win.
The Kohawks return to action on Thursday, as they travel to Augustana. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Rock Island, Ill.
