CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid on Saturday, as the Kohawks beat Illinois Tech 83-71 at Eby Fieldhouse.
Illinois Tech scored a pair of baskets in the opening :45, but a layup by Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) with 18:29 to play in the first half started an 11-4 run by the Kohawks in the next 2:52. A 3-pointer by Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) gave Coe an 11-8 lead with 15:37 to play in the opening half. Coe pushed the lead to 20-14 on a layup by Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) with 10:13 to play in the half, but the Scarlet Hawks scored the next six points to tie the game with 7:50 to play in the half. Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) hit a layup with 5:40 to play, as Coe closed the opening half on a 10-4 run, taking a 32-26 lead the break.
Just like the first half, Illinois Tech scored the first four points in less than a minute, cutting Coe's lead to 32-30. A jumper by Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) with 18:29 to play started a quick 6-1 run by Coe, as Timp gave Coe a 38-31 lead with 16:48 to play on a tipin. Back-to-back baskets by Anthony Mosley Jr. cut the Kohawk lead to 41-38 with 15:06 to play. Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) hit a layup and was fouled, as the Kohawks started a 7-2 run in the next 1:15. Meyer had two and-ones during the run, as Coe led 48-40 with 13:37 to play.
Mosley Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 13:17 remaining, as the Scarlet Hawks went on a 7-0 run, cutting the Kohawk lead to 48-47 with 11:15 to play. The Kohawks put the game away after that, as a tipin by Winker with 9:49 to play started a 13-4 run by Coe in the next 2:05. A 3-pointer by Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) with 7:44 left gave Coe a 61-51 lead. Illinois Tech made one final push, trimming the lead to six with 7:09 to play. A layup by Shedeck with 6:58 remaining started a 17-5 run by the Kohawks in the next 4:09, as Vonderhaar's 3-pointer with 2:49 left gave Coe its largest lead of the game at 78-60. The Scarlet Hawks outscored Coe 11-5 in the final 2:11, as Coe won 83-71.
The Kohawks were 30-of-65 (46.2%) from the field and 7-of-18 (38.9%) from downtown. Illinois Tech was 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the floor and 3-of-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 16-of-23 (69.6%) at the free throw line, while the Scarlet Hawks were 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the charity stripe.
Meyer had a team-high 21 points for Coe, while Haaland and Vonderhaar added 16 and 11 respectively. Timp, Shedeck and Roth each had eight points, as Shedeck went over 500 points in his career. Shedeck and Vonderhaar led the Kohawks with eight rebounds, while Meyer and Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) each had five boards. Haaland had a team-high six assists, while Meyer had four. Timp added a career-high three dimes. Shedeck and Williams each blocked a pair of shots, tying a career-high for Williams.
The Kohawks (6-7, 2-2 IIAC) return to action on Wednesday, as they host Nebraska Wesleyan (9-3, 3-1 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse as part of a doubleheader with the women.
