CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College held one of the highest scoring teams in the nation to 24 points below its average on Wednesday, as the Kohawks beat Nebraska Wesleyan 85-73.
The Kohawks held an early 6-5 lead when Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) hit a layup to start a 10-0 run in the next 1:35. A layup and free throw by Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) with 16:42 to play in the half, giving Coe a 16-5 lead. The Prairie Wolves cut the lead to eight, but a layup by Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 13:18 left in the half started a 13-2 run by the Kohawks in the next 5:55. A 3-pointer by Meyer with 7:23 left in the half gave Coe a 31-12 lead. Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) gave Coe its largest lead of the game with 3:46 left in the half on a layup, giving Coe a 36-14 lead. Nebraska Wesleyan scored the final five points of the half, as Coe led 44-27 at the break.
Nebraska Wesleyan opened the second half on an 11-4 run in the first 3:39, cutting Coe's lead to 48-38. The Kohawk lead remained at 10 with 12:13 to play when Shedeck hit a layup with 11:48 to play, starting an 11-2 run. Vonderhaar gave Coe a 67-48 lead with 7:08 to play on a layup. The Prairie Wolves would get the lead to eight in the final minute, but Coe scored the final four points at the free throw line for an 85-73 victory.
The Kohawks were 21-of-46 (45.7%) from the floor and 4-of-16 from beyond the arc. Coe set a school record with 39 made free throws, as Coe was 39-of-51 (76.5%) at the charity stripe. Nebraska Wesleyan was 29-of-72 (40.3%) from the field and 7-of-22 (31.8%) from downtown. The Prairie Wolves were 8-of-12 at the free throw line.
Shedeck recorded his fourth double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Meyer and Vonderhaar each had 15 points, while Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) had 13. Winker had a career-high nine points off the bench. Vonderhaar and Timp each had eight rebounds, while Meyer pulled down six. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) had a game-high six assists, while Shedeck had three assists. Josh Jirak (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) had a career-high four steals. The victory was the 60th at Coe for Head Coach Bryan Martin, as he passed Willis Lamb (1938-47) for fifth on the all-time wins list.
The Kohawks (7-7, 3-2 IIAC) return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Simpson (9-5, 2-3 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Indianola. A link to live video and stats will be available at CoeAthletics.com.
