INDIANOLA, Iowa - A 12-0 run by the Coe College women's basketball team in the fourth quarter Saturday led the Kohawks to a 70-65 win at Simpson.
Simpson dominated the first quarter, scoring the first nine points of the game in 2:25. The Storm kept the run going, taking a 21-6 lead with 1:40 to play in the first quarter. Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) scored five of the final seven points in the first quarter, as Coe cut the Storm lead to 23-11 after the opening frame. Simpson would keep the lead in double digits for most the second quarter. The Storm led 32-18 with 4:59 to play when Leah Goodman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) hit a 3-pointer to start a 10-4 run to close the first half. A jumper by Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) with :59 left cut the Storm lead to 36-28 at the break.
Both teams struggled to score early in the third quarter before Hobbs hit a 3-pointer with 8:02 to play in the frame. The long ball started a 16-6 run that saw Coe hit four 3-pointers in the stretch. A 3-pointer by Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) with 3:23 left in the quarter gave Coe its first lead of the day at 44-42. Simpson wouldn't back down, as the Storm scored the next eight points. A free throw by Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) with :04 left in the third quarter cut the Storm lead to 50-45 after three quarters.
Coe and Simpson traded baskets for the first half of the final quarter before a free throw by Hobbs with 5:04 to play started a 12-0 run by the Kohawks in the next 4:36. Another free throw by Hobbs with 3:13 left gave Coe the lead for good. Simpson would cut the lead to five three times in the final :30, but couldn't get any closer.
The Kohawks were 22-of-63 (34.9%) from the field and 12-of-35 (34.3%) from downtown. Coe's 35 3-point attempts are tied for the fifth most in school history. The Storm were 27-of-66 (40.9%) from the floor and 3-of-21 (14.3%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the charity stripe, while Simpson connected on all eight attempts from the free throw line. Simpson held a 44-10 advantage in the paint. The victory was just the fifth in program history at Cowles Fieldhouse.
Lehman led the Kohawks with 21 points, while Hansche and Hobbs joined her in double figures with 17 and 13 points respectively. Hansche passed Shelly Howe '96 for second in school history with 1,217 career points. Hobbs became the eighth player in school history to score 1,100 career points. Lehman moved into eighth in school history with 93 career 3-pointers, while Hobbs moved into 10th with 75 long balls. Lehman became the 24th player in school history to make 300 career field goals. Hobbs moved into seventh on the single-season free throws made list with 94 this year. Claussen and Goodman each finished with six points.
Hobbs had a game-high 11 rebounds, as she recorded her fourth-straight double-double and sixth of the season. Lehman had nine rebounds, while Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) and Hansche had eight and six apiece. Hobbs had a game-high five assists, while Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) had four. Lehman and Goodman each had two assists. Lehman had a game-high three steals, while Goodman swiped a pair. Hansche became the third player in school history to play over 2,800 career minutes.
The Kohawks (8-7, 3-3 IIAC) have a quick turnaround before their next game, as they travel to Loras (8-7, 2-4 IIAC) on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Dubuque. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
