CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kohawk offense put on quite a show in the game's first 30 minutes Saturday at Clark Field, as they posted 41 points en route to a 48-14 lashing of Simpson.  Coe outgained Simpson 431-53 in the opening half, while leading 41-0 at the break.

After receiving the opening kickoff, and being pushed back to their own 12-yard line, the Kohawks went marching down the field.  Coe completed two third down conversions of more than 11 yards on the drive, with the two big completions from sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska).  The first was a 33-yard strike to junior Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) on third and 12.  The second play was a 55-yard pass to senior Robert Welborn (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) down to the three-yard line on third and 11.  A three-yard rush by Boyle on the following play, along with the point after attempt by junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) put the Kohawks ahead 7-0 just 2:27 into the game.

A swarming Kohawk defense held Simpson to just four yards on its first possession, forcing a punt, where the Kohawks took over at their own 29-yard line. Boyle once again had the hot hand, leading Coe down the field on a nine-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a scrambling Boyle hitting senior Chris Voss (Ames, Iowa/Ames) in the end zone.  The point after by Rausa made it 14-0 Coe with 8:04 to play in the opening quarter.

Another three-and-out for the Storm offense gave the Kohawks the ball at their own three-yard line.  Coe wouldn't let being backed up against its own goal line stop them from another score, as this time around it was a 97-yard drive on just five plays that put Coe ahead 20-0.  Boyle completed a 25-yard pass to senior John McCarthy (Iowa City, Iowa/City) on third and four before completing a 62-yard pass to junior Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon) for a touchdown.

Sophomore Austin Lloyd (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) intercepted his second pass in as many weeks to start the second quarter.  Having a short field to work with, Boyle capped a nine-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run, extending the Kohawk lead to 27-0.

After a 32-yard punt by freshman Chase Cooling (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) , junior Seth Johnson (Glidden, Iowa/Glidden-Ralston) intercepted Chris Garza, putting the Kohawks just 18-yards from the end zone.  In his first pass attempt of the season, Rozum found freshman Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) in the end zone after a Jet Sweep play that put Coe ahead 34-0.

With 2:45 to play in the game, the Kohawk defense came up with another three-and-out, setting the offense up for one last first half touchdown.  Boyle led a 57-yard drive that included 19 and 20-yard completions to Rozum and Takes, ended with a one-yard touchdown run by freshman Matt Myers (Fairbank, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) with :14 remaining in the half.

The only second half points for the Kohawks came on their second possession.  Junior Patrick Wallace (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) led a 49-yard drive in just six plays, as he rushed over the goal line for a touchdown with 1:47 to play in the quarter.  Simpson would add two touchdown late in the fourth quarter for its only scores of the game.

Boyle led the Kohawk offense with 51-yards rushing on just five carries.  He also completed 14-of-22 passes for 306 yards.  Boyle did all of his work in the first half, as he remained on the bench during the second half.  Wallace was second on the team with 46-yards rushing on six carries.  He completed 6-of-9 passes for 54 yards.  Senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) added 43-yards rushing on a game-high 14 carries.  He also caught three passes for 23-yards.  In all, 12 different Kohawks rushed the ball in the victory.

Takes led the Kohawks with five receptions for 124 yards.  Welborn added 88-yards on three receptions, while Rozum had 53-yards on just two catches.  Voss caught three balls for 17 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, seniors Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) had 10 tackles apiece.  Freshman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) added one and a half sacks.

Coe will be on the road for its next two games, starting with a 1 p.m. kickoff in Dubuque next Saturday against Loras College at the Rock Bowl.
