INDIANOLA, Iowa - Despite trailing 8-0 in the first three minutes of the game, the Coe College men's basketball team scored 40 points in each half on Saturday as they beat Simpson 80-70.
Simpson raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first 2:18 on baskets by four different players. With 17:20 to play in the first half, Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) hit a layup to start an 11-3 run by the Kohawks in the next 2:18. Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon), making his first career start, hit a 3-pointer with 15:02 to play in the opening half to tie the game at 11-11. Simpson used another run, this time 8-2, to take a 19-13 lead with 11:13 to play in the half. Austin Turner gave Simpson a 30-25 lead on a 3-pointer with 5:11 to play in the half. A pair of free throws by Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) with 4:44 to play in the half started a 15-6 run for the Kohawks to close the half. A 3-pointer by Shedeck with :04 left in the half gave Coe a 40-36 lead at the break.
Coe pushed the lead to six twice early in the second half, but a layup by DJ Dafney with 17:29 to play cut Coe's lead to 44-42. Shedeck hit a jumper on the other end, as Coe went on a 10-4 run in the next 4:26. A pair of free throws by Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) with 12:23 left gave Coe a 54-46 lead. Simpson quickly tied the game with eight-straight points. Coe rattled off the next six points, taking a 60-54 lead with 8:48 to play.
The Storm cut the lead to four with 8:30 to play, but six-straight points by the Kohawks pushed the lead to double digits. Simpson would trim the lead to six with 2:02 to play, but couldn't get any closer.
Four Kohawks scored in double figures, led by 19 points from Shedeck. Timp and Hook each had 12 points, while Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) added 10 . It was a career-high for Hook. Vonderhaar had a game-high 13 rebounds, as he recorded his fourth double-double of the year. Vonderhaar became the 21st player in school history to reach 400 career rebounds, while also becoming the 15th player to play over 2,100 career minutes. Timp had nine rebounds, while Shedeck added eight boards. Shedeck led the Kohawks with four assists, while Timp tied a career-high with three. Vonderhaar added a pair of dimes, while Shedeck had two steals.
Coe was 26-of-51 (51%) from the field and 7-of-13 (53.8%) from downtown. Simpson was 25-of-57 (43.9%) from the floor and 6-of-21 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 21-of-25 (84%) at the free throw line, while the Storm were 14-of-19 (73.7%) at the charity stripe. Head Coach Bryan Martin improved to 8-1 against his alma mater.
The Kohawks (8-7, 4-2 IIAC) return to action on Monday, as they travel to Loras (11-4, 4-2 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Dubuque. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
