DUBUQUE, Iowa - Cassie Hocker (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) broke a 16-year old school record Saturday, as the Coe College track and field teams opened the season at the Sol Butler Classic.
Hocker won the 55-meter dash in 7.28, breaking the previous record of 7.33 by Luyre Hupfer in 2001. Hocker's time is the best in the Iowa Conference and ranks second in the nation. Carlyn Cole (Baldwin City, Kansas/Baldwin) was second in the 55-meter dash in 7.52, the fifth best time in the IIAC. Josephine Bautch (Reedsburg, Wisconsin/Reedsburg) was eighth in the 600-meter run in 1:48.89. In the 4x400-meter relay, Coe's team of Amanda Brummet (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale), Cole, Rachel Kelly (Lone Tree, Colo./Rock Canyon) and Bautch finished second in 4:14.37. The relay is the fourth best time in the IIAC and 42nd best in the nation. Tieranny Keahna was fifth in the weight throw at 44' 10 3/4" (13.68m), the fifth best throw in the Iowa Conference.
Clayton Birkes (Columbia, Mo./Southern Boone Country R-I) was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 52.72, while Nathan Suell (Fredericksburg, Iowa/Turkey Valley) was just behind him in sixth in 53.21. Hunter Harshorne was 10th in 53.60. All three times rank in the top six in the Iowa Conference. Chris Hawkins (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.00. Coe was sixth in the 4x400-meter relay, as Coe's team of Anton Jones (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville), Dakota Helm (Baldwin City, Kansas/Baldwin), Suell and Birkes finished in 3:35.11, the fourth best time in the Iowa Conference. Hawkins finished second in the long jump at 22' 11 1/4" (6.99m). His jump is the best in the Iowa Conference and ninth in the nation. Jacob Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) was 10th in the shot put at 43' 9 3/4" (13.35m). Hayes was seventh in the weight throw at 50' 3 1/4" (15.32m), while Robbie Peters (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) was eighth at 49' 4 1/4" (15.04m). Hayes' throw ranks fifth in the IIAC and 44th in the nation, while Peters' toss is seventh in the league and 55th in the nation.
Both Kohawk teams finished ninth at the meet. The Kohawk men scored 29 points, while the women scored 27. Coe returns to action on Saturday at the Cornell Quad. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. A link to live results is available at CoeAthletics.com.
