DUBUQUE, Iowa - Loras College used a 14-4 run late in the fourth quarter Monday, as the Duhawks beat Coe 65-63 at Lillis Court.
After trading baskets early in the game, a layup by Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) with 5:21 to play in the first quarter started a 9-2 run for the Kohawks until Miranda Chapman hit a 3-pointer with :05 left in the opening frame. The Kohawks led 13-9 after the first frame.
Coe quickly pushed the lead to eight early in the second quarter before a 7-2 run by the Duhawks trimmed Coe's lead to 21-18 with 6:21 to play in the first half. The Kohawks led 23-20 before Shelby Lehmann (Wadena, Iowa/North Fayette Valley) hit a jumper with 5:23 left in the half, sparking an 8-0 run in the next 3:16. Loras went on a 7-2 run before Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) hit a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Coe a 36-27 lead at the break.
Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) hit a jumper with 5:54 to play in the third quarter, giving the Kohawks a 44-33 lead. The Duhawks quickly answered with a 9-0 run in the next 1:52. Terese McMahon hit a layup with :33 left in the third quarter, leaving Coe with a 46-44 lead heading into the final frame.
A pair of free throws with 6:38 to play by Erin Weaver gave Loras a 51-50 lead. The Kohawks answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Hobbs and Hansche, taking a 56-51 lead with 4:20 to play. The Duhawks took over from there, going on a 14-4 run in the next 3:56 to take a 65-60 lead with :10 to play. Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) hit a 3-pointer with :02 left, leaving the Duhawks with a 65-53 victory.
Four Kohawks scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Hobbs. Hobbs moved into a tie for sixth in school history with 96 made free throws this season. Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) had 11 points, while Hansche and Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) had 10 points apiece, tying a career-high for Claussen. Hansche hit her 275th career 3-pointer in the game, while moving into seventh in school history with 412 career field goals.
Hobbs had a game-high 10 rebounds, as she notched her fifth-straight double-double and the seventh of the season. Hobbs moved into a tie for fourth in school history with 397 defensive rebounds, while becoming the 16th player in school history to play over 2,100 minutes. Holmes had five rebounds, while Lehman added four. Holmes, Hobbs and Leah Goodman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had three assists apiece, while Claussen, Hansche and Huber each had a pair. Claussen tied a career-high in assists.
Coe was 27-of-54 from the floor and 7-of-22 (31.8%) from downtown. Coe now has 144 made 3-pointers on the season, the eighth most in school history. The Duhawks shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field and 4-of-12 from 3-point range. The Kohawks made two free throws on their only trip to the charity stripe, while the Duhawks were 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line. The Duhawks held a 21-9 advantage in bench points. Coe led the game for 31:34 before suffering their 10th-straight loss at Loras.
