DUBUQUE, Iowa - Loras College scored 24 points off 24 Coe College turnovers Monday night, as the Duhawks beat the Kohawks 88-75 at Lillis Court.
Coe held an early 5-4 lead on five points from Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) in the first 1:34 of the game. Loras answered with a quick 7-2 run in 2:10 taking an 11-7 lead with 15:19 to play in the first half. The Kohawks went to work after the Duhawk run, as a layup by Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) with 14:55 to play in the first half started a 13-3 run for the Kohawks over the next 8:18. A layup by Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) gave Coe a 20-14 lead with 6:42 to play in the half. Loras answered with an even bigger run, outscoring Coe 19-6 in the next 4:44 to take a 33-26 lead. The Loras lead would stay at seven until the half, as the Duhawks led 36-29 at the break.
The Duhawks held Coe scoreless in the first 4:10 of the second half, scoring 10 points of their own to take a 46-29 lead with 16:51 to play. Haaland scored Coe's first basket of the second half. Loras pushed the lead back to 14 with 14:21 to play on a pair of free throws by Michael Mims. Coe scored eight-straight after that, starting with a fastbreak layup from Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 13:41 to play. A pair of free throws by Haaland with 11:31 to play cut Loras' lead to 48-42. Justin VanWambeke hit a pair of free throws with 2:01 to play, giving Loras a 77-67 lead. A layup from Shedeck and 3-pointer by Haaland trimmed the lead to 77-72 with 1:39 to play before Loras closed the game on an 11-3 run, with all 11 points coming at the free throw line.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, with Coe going 27-of-54 and Loras shooting 29-of-58. The Kohawks were 6-of-17 (35.3%) from downtown, while the Duhawks were 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 15-of-20 at the free throw line, while Loras was 22-of-27 (81.5%). Loras had a 24-8 advantage in points off turnovers and 45-11 advantage in bench points.
Haaland had a game-high 22 points, while also dishing out six assists. Timp had 15 points, while Shedeck and Vonderhaar had 14 and 13 points respectively. Vonderhaar hit the 900 point mark for his career in the loss. Vonderhaar notched his second-straight double-double, and fifth of the season, with a game-high 10 rebounds. He also moved into a tie for ninth in school history with 309 career defensive rebounds. Timp and Shedeck each added four boards. Shedeck had two assists, while Michael Packard (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) had a career-high two blocked shots.
The Kohawks (8-8, 4-3 IIAC) have another quick turnaround, as they host Iowa Conference leader Buena Vista (9-6, 5-1 IIAC) on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
