CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A strong effort on both ends of the floor Wednesday night led the Coe College women's basketball team to an 81-64 win over Buena Vista at Eby Fieldhouse.
The Beavers scored the first five points of the game in the first 1:43 before the Kohawk offense ignited. Senior Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) hit back-to-back 3-pointers, as Coe went on a 22-5 run in the next 3:59. A pair of free throws with 3:03 left in the first quarter by Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) gave Coe a 22-10 lead. Buena Vista responded to Coe's run with a 14-2 run of their own over the last 3:02 of the opening frame, tying the game at 24-24 on a layup by Holly Schneider with :20 left in the quarter.
Coe owned the second quarter, holding the Beavers to just a free throw with 2:35 left in the half. Buena Vista was 0-for-15 from the field and 0-for-10 from downtown in the second frame, as Coe took a 37-25 lead at the break. The Kohawks scored just two points in the final 5:23 of the first half.
The Kohawks stayed hot to start the third quarter, as Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy), Lehman and Hansche hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to start the quarter, giving Coe a 46-25 lead with 8:10 left in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Morgan Muhlbauer with 7:10 left in the quarter started an 11-0 run by the Beavers, as Jessica Jager trimmed the lead to 46-36 with 4:18 left in the frame on a 3-pointer. Coe had the lead back to 16 with 1:07 left in the third quarter before leading 55-41 into the fourth quarter.
Buena Vista cut the lead to 12 on a layup by Liz Riessen with 7:19 to play, but Coe went on a 9-3 run after in less than two minutes to take a 68-50 lead with 4:44 to play. The Beavers would twice get the lead to 13 in the final minutes, but Coe pushed the lead back to 19 before winning 81-64.
Coe was 25-of-58 (43.1%) from the floor and 7-of-21 from downtown. Coe's 151 3-pointers this season is the seventh most in school history. The Beavers were 20-of-71 (28.2%) from the field and 10-of-39 (25.6%) from 3-point range. Coe was 24-of-33 (72.7%) at the free throw line, while the Beavers were 14-of-24 (58.3%) at the charity stripe. Coe had a 30-12 advantage in the paint, while Buena Vista's bench outscored Coe's 29-10. The win was the 10th-straight at Eby Fieldhouse against the Beavers, while it was the eighth-straight win overall against Buena Vista.
A trio of Kohawks scored in double figures, led by 24 points from Lehman. Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had 21 points, while Hansche poured in 18. Hobbs moved into sixth in school history with 1,137 career points, while Lehman became the 21st player in school history to hit the 800 points mark. Lehman moved into a tie for seventh in school history with 94 career 3-pointers, while becoming the 17th player to play over 2,100 career minutes. Hansche hit the 50 3-pointer mark on the season, marking the fourth time in her career she has hit the milestone. Hobbs has now made over 100 free throws on the season, marking the sixth time in school history a player has hit the mark. Hobbs has done it three times.
Hobbs recorded a double-double for the sixth-straight game and eighth time this season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Hobbs became the fourth player in school history to notch 400 career defensive rebounds, while moving into a tie for ninth with 141 career offensive rebounds. Lehman just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) had five boards.
Holmes had a game-high five assists, while Huber had a career-high four dimes. Lehman had three assists, while Hansche had a pair. Holmes and Destiny Smith (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth) had two steals apiece, a career-high for Smith.
The Kohawks (9-8, 4-4 IIAC) return to action on Saturday, as they host Simpson (6-10, 3-4 IIAC). Coe beat Simpson 70-65 last Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
