CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Buena Vista ended the game on a 24-6 run and held Coe College without a field goal in the final 7:46 as the Beavers beat the Kohawks 62-61 on a last second 3-pointer.
The Kohawks started hot, as Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) scored the first seven points of the game to give Coe a 7-0 lead with 17:03 to play in the first half. Coe's lead remained at seven with 15:33 to play when the Beavers went on a 12-5 run over an 8:10 stretch, tying the game on a layup by Kennedy Drey with 6:46 to play in the first half. Coe would score the next seven points, part of a 14-4 run in 4:49. A 3-pointer by Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) with 1:41 left in the half gave Coe a 28-18 lead. Thomas Wisecut hit a jumper with 1:27 left in the half, cutting Coe's lead to 28-20 at the half.
Buena Vista twice cut the lead to five in the first 3:55 of the second half before Coe went on a 10-0 run. A steal and dunk by Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 12:15 to play gave Coe a 46-31 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Shedeck and Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) gave Coe its largest lead of the game at 53-36 with 9:12 to play. A jumper in the lane by Michael Packer with 7:47 to play kept the Kohawk lead at 17, but it would be the final basket of the game for the Kohawks.
In the last seven minutes of the game, Coe went 0-for-7 from the field and 6-of-14 at the free throw line, including 4-of-8 in the final minute. Buena Vista held a 17-4 advantage in rebounds in the final stretch. The Beavers went on a 24-6 run in the final stretch, ending with a 3-pointer by Drey with :00.6 to play, giving Buena Vista the 62-61 victory.
Coe was 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor and 4-of-18 (22.2%) from downtown. Buena Vista was 23-of-70 (32.9%) from the field and 7-of-18 (38.9%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 11-of-19 (57.9%) at the free throw line, while the Beavers were 9-of-14 (64.3%) at the charity stripe. Buena Vista held a 19-9 advantage in second chance points, while out-rebounding Coe 46-26 with 18 offensive rebounds.
Vonderhaar led the Kohawks with 15 points, while Shedeck joined him in double figures with 10. Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City), Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and Roth each had six points. Vonderhaar had a team-high eight rebounds, as he moved into eighth in school history with 317 career defensive rebounds. Packard and Shedeck had seven and six boards respectively, a new career-high for Packard. Haaland had five assists, while Meyer had a pair. Shedeck tied a career-high with five blocked shots, while Packard had a career-high three blocks. Shedeck also had three steals.
The Kohawks (8-9, 4-4 IIAC) return to action on Saturday, as they host Simpson (10-6, 3-4 IIAC). Coe beat Simpson 80-70 last Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
