GRINNELL, Iowa - The Coe College swimming and diving teams opened the weekend at the Grinnell Invite on Friday, as the Kohawk women are in third and the men fifth after the first day.
Coe opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, as the Kohawk team of Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior), Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) and Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) touched in 1:45.03. On the men's side, Coe's team of Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III), Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ), Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) and Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) finished 10th in 1:32.60. Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South) was fifth in the 200-yard IM in 2:18.30. Freeland finished 14th in 2:22.52, while Fitzgerald was 15th in 2:22.55. On the men's side, Flynn was ninth in 2:05.92, while Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) finished 18th and 19th respectively. Backhaus touched in 2:10.78, while Dangremond finished in 2:10.96.
Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) was 11th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.45, while Faidley was second on the men's side in 4:53.24. Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was eighth in 5:05.40, while Markham was 11th in 5:04.30. Phillip Cunningham (Byron, III./Byron ) was 13th in 5:15.94, while Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) was 18th in 5:18.35. Bundy finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.21, while Thompson was eighth in 1:04.11. On the men's side, Flynn was sixth in 56.80. Douglas Sauer (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights ) was 11th in 57.22, while Nate Homan was 20th in 1:03.44.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Fitzgerald was third in 2:32.39, while Freeland was fourth in 2:35.26. Freeland's time was the fifth best in school history. On the men's side, Dangremond was fifth in 2:20.62. King was ninth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:25.89. On the men's side, Faidley was fourth in 2:02.84. Three Kohawks were in the B final, as Cheng finished 13th in 2:10.37, Backhaus was 15th in 2:17.25 and Cunningham was 20th in 2:25.37.
The Kohawks were second in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, as Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley), King, Bundy and Freeland finished in 8:27.06. On the men's side, Coe's team of Faidley, Markham, Sterns and Flynn finished third in 7:29.32. In the 400-yard medley relay, Coe's team of Bundy, Fitzgerald, King and Thompson finished fifth in 4:20.73. On the men's side, Coe's team of Sauer, Dangremond, Backhaus and Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) finished ninth in 3:48.47.
After the first day, the Kohawk women are in third with 247 points. NCAA Division I Nebraska Omaha leads the team race with 821 points. On the men's side, Coe is fifth with 264 points.
