CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team didn't score in the final three minutes Saturday, as Simpson scored the final five points for a 64-61 win at Eby Fieldhouse.
The Kohawks and Storm were facing each other for the second time in the last eight days. Last week, it was the Storm that raced out to a 15 point lead in the first quarter before Coe came back for a win. After Simpson scored the first basket of the game on Saturday, Coe went on a 9-2 run in less than two minutes to take a 9-4 lead with 7:27 to play in the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Ellen Gallagher with 4:43 to play in the the first quarter gave the Storm a 12-11, as neither team scored for the rest of the quarter.
Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) hit a jumper with 9:10 left in the first half, but Simpson answered with a 3-pointer by Megan Lankford to start an 11-3 run in the next 3:17. Back-to-back layups by Noreen Morrow gave the Storm a 23-16 lead with 5:10 left in the half. Simpson led by six with 4:25 left in the half when a jumper by Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) started a 12-0 run for the Kohawks, as Lehman closed the run with a 3-pointer to give Coe a 30-24 lead with 2:11 left in the half. Britney Boland hit a 3-pointer with :13 left in the half, as Coe took a 32-31 lead at the break.
Neither team led by more than three in the third quarter until late when Simpson went on a 7-0 run, taking a 52-45 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter. Coe would score the next five points before Morrow hit a layup with :50 left in the frame, giving the Storm a 54-50 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Simpson pushed the lead to 59-52 with 7:44 to play on a 3-pointer by Gallagher. The Kohawks answered with a 9-0 run, as Lehman gave Coe a 61-59 lead with 3:02 to play. The basket was the final points of the game for the Kohawks. Maddie Simmons hit a 3-pointer with 2:18 left to give Simpson the lead for good. With :03 left, Janey Botkins hit a pair of free throws for the 64-61 victory.
Lehman led the Kohawks with a game-high 17 points, as she moved into seventh in school history with 95 career 3-pointers. Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) and Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) joined Lehman in double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively. Hobbs moved into fifth in school history with 1,147 career points, while also moving into a tie for third in single-season school history with 107 free throws made this season. Hansche is now tied for fifth in school history with 423 field goals, as she became the third player in school history to play over 2,900 career minutes. Hansche moved into ninth in single-season school history with 56 3-pointers this year, while she also cracked the NCAA Division III Career 3-pointers made list. Hansche currently ranks 22nd with 284 career long balls. Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) had a career-high eight points.
Hobbs had a game-high eight rebounds, as her streak of six-straight double-doubles was snapped. Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Huber each had six boards. Claussen and Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) each had a career-high three assists to lead Coe. Hobbs, Lehman, Holmes and Hansche each had two assists apiece. Lehman became the 13th player in school history to tally 200 career dimes. Hobbs added a pair of steals.
Coe was 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the floor and 6-of-21 (28.6%) from 3-point range. With 157 3-pointers this year, the Kohawks have the sixth best total in school history. The Storm were 24-of-61 (39.3%) from the field and 11-of-21 (52.4%) from downtown. Simpson was 3-of-21 from downtown in Coe's win last week in Indianola. Coe was 5-of-7 (71.4%) at the free throw line, while the Storm were 5-of-9 (55.6%) at the charity stripe.
The Kohawks (9-9, 4-5 IIAC) return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to eighth-ranked Wartburg (16-2, 8-1 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Waverly.
