CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of late 3-pointers weren't enough for the Kohawks on Saturday, as Simpson beat Coe College 67-62 at Eby Fieldhouse.
Defense dominated the game early, as Coe led 10-6 with 12:48 to play in the first half on a five points each from Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar). Timp hit four-straight free throws, giving Coe an 18-14 lead with 8:22 left in the first half. The Storm answered with a 14-4 run in the 3:44, as Simpson took a 28-22 lead with 4:25 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Jamie Montgomery. A 3-pointer by Hunter Pflughaupt (Walker, Iowa/North-Linn) with :10 left tied the game, but Austin Turner hit a free throw with :02 left in the half, giving the Storm a 36-35 lead at the break.
Simpson would push the lead to five with 13:38 to play in the game, but a 3-pointer by Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) started a 7-2 run for the Kohawks as Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) tied the game at 47-47 with 11:29 to play on a layup. With 4:27 to play, Shedeck cut the Storm lead to 57-56 on a layup, but Simpson scored the next five points to take a 62-56 lead with 1:22 to play. Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 left, but a jumper by Ryan Skaar as the shot clock expired on the other end with :29 left pushed the Storm lead back to 64-59. Roth hit another 3-pointer with :19 left, but Simpson sealed the game at the free throw line after that for the 67-62 victory.
Coe was 19-of-43 (44.2%) from the floor and 6-of-18 from downtown. Simpson was 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the field and 3-of-17 (17.6%) from 3-point range. Coe was 18-of-21 (85.7%) at the free throw line, while Simpson was 8-of-14 (57.1%) at the charity stripe. Simpson held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Timp led the Kohawks with 13 points, while Haaland joined him in double figures with 10. Shedeck had nine points, while Williams had seven. Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) recorded his 500th career point in the loss. Shedeck led the Kohawks with nine rebounds, while Timp had five boards. Shedeck earned his 300th career defensive rebound in the game. Haaland had a game-high three assists.
The Kohawks (8-10, 4-5 IIAC) return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Wartburg (12-6, 4-5 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Waverly.
