GRINNELL, Iowa - Three events turned in top 10 times in school history Saturday, while a fourth broke a meet record for the Coe College swimming and diving teams at the Grinnell Invite.
The Kohawks started the day with a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) and Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) finished in 1:54.59, the fifth best time in school history. On the men's side, Coe's team of Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III), Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) and Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) finished eighth in 1:42.33. Four Kohawks finished in the top 15 of the men's 400-yard IM, led by Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) in 11th in 4:36.79 with the ninth best time in school history. Doug Sauer was 12th in 4:37.25, while Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) was 14th in 4:41.76 and Phillip Cunningham (Byron, III./Byron ) coming in 15th in 4:49.98.
Markham finished 13th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.37, while Flynn was 14th in 1:52.20. Sterns finished 16th in 1:53.79. Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) finished 18th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.77. On the men's side, Cheng was ninth in 55.95, while Faidley was 13th in 56.19. Fitzgerald and Freeland finished third and fourth in the women's 100-yard breaststroke. Fitzgerald touched in 1:09.75, while Freeland finished in 1:10.80 with the fourth best time in school history. On the men's side, Dangremond was eighth in 1:02.56.
Bundy was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.48, while Thompson was 13th in 2:17.90. Flynn was fifth on the men's side in 2:04.65, while Sauer was eighth in 2:07.95. Fitzgerald was 10th in the women's 50-yard freestyle in 26.17, while Freeland was 12th in 25.98 (B Final). Faidley won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:43.60, breaking the meet record. Cunningham was 10th in 18:36.17. Coe was 11th in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the Kohawk team of Fitzgerald, Thompson, Bundy and Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) finished in 3:55.52. On the men's side, Markham, Faidley, Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) and Flynn finished ninth in 3:23.73.
The Kohawk women finished third with 424 points, while the men were fifth with 505 points. NCAA Division I Nebraska-Omaha won the women's side with 1,692 points, while Grinnell won the men's race with 1,047.5 points. Coe returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Luther. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Decorah.
