WAVERLY, Iowa - A 34-6 run by 14th-ranked Wartburg over the first and second quarter led the Knights to an 83-51 win over Coe College Wednesday night at Levick Arena.
The Kohawks were looking good in the early minutes, holding a 7-4 lead over the Knights at the 5:48 mark of the opening quarter, as Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) had five early points for Coe. Things changed just minutes later on a layup by Aryn Jones, as the Knights closed the first quarter on a 17-4 run to take a 21-11 lead. The Kohawks turned the ball over five times and were 2-of-8 from the field during the run.
Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) hit a pair of free throws early in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 21-13. The Knights put the game away after that. A layup by Miranda Murphy started a 17-0 run for the Knights over a 5:53 span. Coe was 0-for-7 from the field with three turnovers during the stretch, while Wartburg was 8-of-9 from the field. A layup by Adrienne Boettger with 4:03 left in the half gave Wartburg a 38-13 lead. Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) hit a layup with 1:02 left in the first half for the final points of the half, leaving the Knights with a 44-18 lead at the break.
Over a nearly 10 minute stretch from the third to fourth quarters, Wartburg went on another big run. This time it was a 25-8 run, with Coe turning the ball over seven times in the stretch. Erika Perlewitz (Waukesha, Wis./University Lake) scored the final points of the game on a 3-pointer with :32 left, leaving Wartburg with the 83-51 victory.
Lehman led the Kohawks with 18 points, as she moved into a tie for ninth in school history with 136 field goals made this season. Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy), Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) and Kyna Smith (Baldwin City, Kan./Baldwin) each had five points. Hansche moved into a tie for fourth in school history with 425 career field goals. Holmes had a game-high seven rebounds, while Hansche and Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) had five and four respectively. With three rebounds, Hobbs moved into 10th in school history with 557 career boards. Holmes had a game-high three assists, while Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and Smith had two dimes apiece, tying a career-high for Smith. Hobbs had a pair of steals. Hansche became the 13th player in school history to play in 100 games, while Hobbs went over the 2,200 minute mark for her career.
Coe was 18-of-53 (34%) from the field and 4-of-22 (18.2%) from downtown. The Knights were 28-of-62 (45.2%) from the floor and 3-of-18 (16.7%0 from beyond the arc. The Kohawks were 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line, while the Knights were 24-of-29 (82.8%) at the charity stripe. Wartburg held a 36-16 advantage in the paint and 31-9 in points off turnovers. The loss was Coe's largest against Wartburg since a 101-58 loss in 1993.
