WAVERLY, Iowa - A 21-3 run in the second half wasn't enough for the Kohawks on Wednesday, as Wartburg beat Coe College 68-60 at Levick Arena.
The Knights jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first 2:28, as Coe went 1-of-4 from the field to start the game. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) hit a 3-pointer with 17:09 to play in the first half, but the Knights answered with a 10-3 run in 4:52, taking a 16-8 lead with 12:17 to play in the opening half. Coe didn't back down, as back-to-back baskets by Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) started a 9-0 run for Coe in the next 6:03. A 3-pointer by Haaland with 6:14 left in the half gave Coe a 17-16 lead. With 5:55 left in the half, Josh Gehling hit a layup and free throw, as Wartburg closed the opening half on a 15-3 run, taking a 31-20 lead at the break. Coe was 1-of-6 from the field during the Wartburg run.
Wartburg started the second half on a 12-3 run, taking a 43-23 lead with 16:03 to play. Once again, the Kohawks wouldn't go away despite trailing by 20. A 3-pointer by Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 15:57 to play started a 21-3 Kohawk run in the next 5:45. Coe was 6-of-8 during the run from the field, while Wartburg was 1-of-4 with five turnovers. The Knights led 53-51 with 7:16 to play when Wartburg went on an 11-4 run to take a 64-55 lead with 4:21 to play. Coe would cut the lead to five with 1:01 to play on a layup by Shedeck, but couldn't get any closer as the Knights held on for the 68-60 victory.
The Kohawks were 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the field and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from downtown. Wartburg was 25-of-53 (47.2%) from the floor and 6-of-22 (27.3%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 11-of-16 (68.8%) at the free throw line, while Wartburg was 12-of-19 (63.2%) at the charity stripe. Coe held a 23-12 advantage in points off turnovers and 27-13 in bench points, while Wartburg had a 28-18 advantage in the paint. The loss was the sixth-straight at Wartburg for the Kohawks.
Haaland led the Kohawks with 14 points, while Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) and Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) had 10 points apiece, tying a career-high for Roth. Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) had eight points off the bench. Shedeck had five rebounds, while Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption), Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) and Roth had four boards apiece, a career-high for Winker. Haaland had a game-high three assists, while Meyer had a pair of dimes. Meyer also had two steals.
