PELLA, Iowa - Central College went on an 18-1 run in the first half over a nearly nine minute span, as the Dutch beat Coe College 80-61 Saturday at Kuyper Gym.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the first five minutes, as the game was tied three times and neither team led by more than three points. With 14:50 to play in the first half, Trashawn Boyd hit a layup to start the 18-1 run over the next 8:19. A free throw by Austin Glawe with 6:31 left in the half gave the Dutch a 29-11 lead. A free throw by Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) with 6:17 left in the half started a 10-2 Coe run in 1:32, as Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) cut the lead to 10 with 4:45 to play on a layup. Central closed the half on a 10-0 run before Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) hit a jumper with :06 left, cutting the lead to 43-25 at the break.
Coe would cut the lead to 13 twice in the second half, but couldn't get any closer. The Kohawks closed the game on a 6-1 run in the last 3:22, leaving Central with the 80-61 victory.
Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) led the Kohawks with 11 points, while Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) and Shedeck had 10 points apiece. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) added seven points and a pair of steals. Shedeck recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 10 rebounds. Shedeck also moved into ninth in school history with 312 career defensive rebounds. Meyer had five boards, while Vonderhaar added four. Meyer had a game-high four assists, while Shedeck had a pair of steals. Williams tied a career-high with two blocked shots.
Coe was 21-of-68 (30.9%) from the field and 3-of-22 (13.6%) from downtown. Central was 30-of-64 (46.9%) from the floor and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 16-of-25 (64%) at the free throw line, while Central was 14-of-22 (63.6%) at the charity stripe. Coe had a 13-4 advantage in second chance points.
