PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team used a 13-0 run between the third and fourth quarters on Saturday, as the Kohawks beat Central 71-61 at Kuyper Gym.
A layup and free throw from Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) started the scoring early for the Kohawks, as Coe opened the game on a 13-2 run in the first 4:20. A 3-pointer by Emily Dine with 5:22 left in the quarter started an 11-2 run in the next 2:46, as the lead was cut to 15-13 on a 3-pointer by Jessica Helton with 2:36 left in the opening frame. Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) hit a 3-pointer with 2:18 left in the first quarter, giving Coe an 18-13 lead after the first.
Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) hit a layup with 4:15 left in the first half, giving Coe a 27-22 lead. A 3-pointer by Kaitlyn Johnson started a 9-0 run for the Dutch to end the half, as Central led 31-27 at the break.
Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) and Lehman combined for three-straight 3-pointers to start the second half, as Coe took a 36-31 lead with 8:41 to play in the frame. Central responded with the next seven points, taking a 38-36 lead with 6:46 left in the quarter on a layup by Kendall Brown. Central used a 9-2 run late in the third quarter to take a 47-42 lead with 2:31 to play in the third quarter. With 2:16 to play in the third quarter, Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) hit a layup to start Coe's 13-0 run in the next 3:19. Hobbs hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at 47-47 before Coe scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter.
Central would cut the lead to six three times in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer. The Kohawks led 67-61 with :53 left before Hansche hit four free throws in the final :30 to seal the Kohawk victory. The win was the 20th in the last 21 meetings against the Dutch.
Lehman led the Kohawks with a game-high 21 points, as she moved into ninth on the single-season list with 368. Lehman is now tied for fifth with 144 field goals this season. Hobbs and Hansche added 20 and 17 points respectively, as Hansche moved into a tie for eighth with 58 3-pointers this season. Lehman became the seventh player in school history to hit 100 career 3-pointers. Hobbs moved into fourth in school history with 1,169 career points and into second on the single-season free throws made list with 113. Hansche moved into fourth in school history with 428 career field goals. Hansche moved into a tie for 21st on the NCAA Division III Career 3-pointers list with 286.
Hobbs notched her ninth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds, while Hansche tied a career-high with nine boards. Hobbs is now tied for ninth in school history with 568 career boards. Huber added seven boards off the bench. Hobbs had a game-high four assists, while Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Boltz had three apiece, a career-high for Boltz. Lehman had a pair of dimes, while Holmes added two steals. Lehman moved past the 2,200 minutes played mark for her career.
Coe was 24-of-70 (34.3%) from the field and 8-of-32 from downtown. As a team, the Kohawks rank fifth in school history with 169 3-pointers this year. The Dutch were 19-of-54 (35.2%) from the floor and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from beyond the arc. Coe was 15-of-17 (88.2%) at the free throw line, while Central was 14-of-19 (73.7%) at the charity stripe. Coe held a 22-14 advantage in the paint and 17-2 on second chance points. Central had a 28-8 advantage in bench points and 14-8 in points off turnovers.
