CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - 11th-ranked Cornell College won eight of 10 matches Thursday night, as the Rams beat 23rd-ranked Coe College 28-7 for the Rams first win in the series since 1999.
The dual started at 141 pounds, as eighth-ranked Josh Martin scored 10 points in the first period to beat Levi Azinger (Pella, Iowa/Pella) by 13-3 major decision. At 149 pounds, Aaron Engle scored three points in each of the last two periods to beat Romello Hidalgo-Monjaras (Concord, Calif./College Park) 8-2 at 149 pounds. Senior Cody Fritz (Solon, Iowa/Solon) took a 14-4 lead into the third period and led 14-8 before Nic Jarvis won by fall in 5:50 at 157 pounds. Ben Hewson led 3-1 into the third period and held on for a 5-3 win over Ryan Harrington (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) at 165 pounds. The Rams earned another upset at 174 pounds, as Mike Maksimovic recorded three first period takedowns in a 10-6 win over seventh-ranked Jake Voss (Ryan, Iowa/West Delaware) at 174 pounds.
Coe's first win came at 184 pounds, as Taylor Mehmen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) scored seven points in the third period for an 11-4 win over Brian Cristion. Mehmen improved to 24-7 on the year with the win. At 197 pounds, Ben Bergen notched four points in the third period for an 8-4 win over Andrew Holladay (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Tyler Ortmann scored five points in the third period, as he beat Garrett Kelson (Danvers, Ill./Olympia) 8-3 at heavyweight. At 125 pounds, Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) recorded four first period takedowns in a 15-7 major decision over Gage Griffin. Rosenberg improved to 19-6 on the year with his eighth-straight victory. In the final match of the night, Nathan Shank scored three points in the second period for a 4-1 win over Fletcher Green (Washington, Iowa/Washington) at 133 pounds.
