CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Luther College scored 25 points off 20 Coe College turnovers Saturday, as the Norse beat Coe 73-56 at Eby Fieldhouse.
Luther opened the game with an 8-2 lead in the first 2:56. Back-to-back baskets by Taylor Huber (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) and Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) with 2:18 left in the first quarter trimmed the lead to 12-10, but Coe didn't score again the rest of the quarter. Luther ended the frame on a 7-0 run, taking a 19-10 lead after one period.
Hobbs and Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups, as the lead was cut to 19-14 with 8:20 left in the opening half. Luther responded with a 13-0 run in the next 4:32, taking a 32-14 lead with 2:53 left in the half. A 3-pointer by Sarah Holtz with :32 left in the half gave the Norse a 39-19 lead at the break. The Kohawks were 1-of-12 from downtown in the first half.
Coe trailed 43-22 with 8:29 left in the third quarter when the Kohawks went on a run. A layup by Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) with 7:58 left in the frame started a 15-2 run in the next 5:27. A 3-pointer and free throw by Destiny Smith (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth) cut the lead to 45-37 with 2:31 left in the quarter. Luther scored six of the final eight points in the quarter, pushing the lead to 51-39 on a basket by Madilyn Heinke with :05 left in the frame. Luther scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to put the game away before winning 73-56.
Hobbs had a game-high 15 points, while Lehman joined her in double figures with 13 points. Lehman moved into sixth on the single-season scoring chart with 381 points, while also moving into fourth in single-season field goals with 150. Huber added seven points off the bench. Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) surpassed 1,300 career points in the loss, joining assistant coach Kayla Waskow as the only players in school history to hit the mark. Hansche is now tied for sixth in single-season school history with 59 3-pointers this year, while she moved into a tie for 20th in NCAA Division III history with 287 in her career.
Lehman had a game-high nine rebounds, while Huber and Hobbs had eight and seven respectively. Hobbs moved into ninth in school history with 575 career rebounds and third in defensive rebounds with 428. Lehman had three assists, while Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) added a pair. Lehman tied a career-high in blocks (three) and steals (four). Hansche moved into a tie for ninth in school history with 102 career games played, while becoming the third player in school history to play over 3,000 career minutes.
Coe was 22-of-57 (38.6%) from the floor and 5-of-22 (22.7%) from downtown. Coe now has 174 3-pointers on the season, the fourth most in school history. Luther was 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the field and 9-of-19 (47.4%) from deep. Coe was 7-of-10 at the free throw line, while Luther was 10-of-13 (76.9%) at the charity stripe. Luther held a 25-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
