CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College hit just four field goals in the first 11:52 of the second half, as Luther College beat the Kohawks 74-65 at Eby Fieldhouse Saturday.
The Kohawks got off to a hot start, as Nolan Timp (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) started the scoring with a 3-pointer with 18:52 to play. Coe used the long ball to start the game on a 12-2 run, as a layup by Zach Schlabaugh (Williamsburg, Iowa/Williamsburg) with 15:11 left in the first half gave Coe a 12-2 lead. Luther responded with six-straight points, part of an 18-10 run in the next 6:33 to cut the lead to 22-20 with 8:14 left in the first half. A layup by Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) and free throw by Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) gave Coe a 25-20 lead with 5:59 left in the half. Coe hit just two more baskets for the rest of the half, as Luther closed the last 3:20 on an 11-5 run to take a 31-30 lead at the break.
A 3-pointer by Jared Nicolaisen started the scoring in the second half, as Luther went on a 20-11 run in the first 10:19, taking a 51-41 lead with 9:32 to play. The lead remained at 10 with 5:38 to play when Coe went on a 9-3 run in 1:53. A free throw by Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) with 3:16 left cut the lead to 62-58, but Coe couldn't get any closer. Luther scored seven of the final 10 points for the 74-65 victory.
Shedeck had a game-high 17 points, as he added a game-high 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. Shedeck went over 600 points for his career in the loss. Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) and Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) joined him in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. Vonderhaar surpassed 2,300 career minutes played. Hook and Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) each had five boards, a career-high for Hook. Haaland and Hook each had three assists, a career-high for Hook. Shedeck blocked four shots, as he moved into fifth in school history with 66 career blocks and tied for ninth in single-season history with 29 this year.
Coe was 20-of-54 (37%) from the field and 4-of-20 from downtown, including 0-for-10 in the second half. Luther was 26-of-62 (41.9%) from the floor and 11-of-24 (45.8%) from downtown, the second most threes the Norse have made in a game this season. Luther was 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the free throw line, while Coe was 21-of-29 (72.4%) from the charity stripe. Luther had a 34-12 advantage in bench points.
The Kohawks (8-13, 4-8 IIAC) return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Nebraska Wesleyan (15-6, 9-4 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb. A link to live video and stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
