GRINNELL, Iowa - Five events had top-50 performances in the country on Saturday, as the Coe College track and field teams competed at the Grinnell Invite.
Carlyn Cole (Baldwin City, Kansas/Baldwin) was second in the 60-meter dash in 7.97, the fourth best time in the Iowa Conference and 42nd in the nation. Cole was also third in the 200-meter dash in 26.73. Amanda Brummet (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) won the 400-meter dash in 1:00.10, the fifth best time in the IIAC. A pair of Kohawks finished in the top five in the 600-meter run, as Rachel Kelly (Lone Tree, Colo./Rock Canyon) was third in 1:48.83 and Kelsie Coates (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) finishing fifth in 1:49.09. Christina Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) was fifth in the pole vault at 9' 6 1/4" (2.90m). Tieranny Keahna (Tama, Iowa/South Tama) was third in the shot put at 38' 4" (11.68m) and sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 46' 3/4" (14.04m).
Nathan Suell (Fredericksburg, Iowa/Turkey Valley) was seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.47. Erik Franklin (Greeley, Colo./West) won the 400-meter dash in 49.90, breaking the previous meet record of 50.24 set last year. Franklin's time is the best in the IIAC and 16th in the nation. Beau Freeborn (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) won the 800-meter run in 1:58.98, the fifth best time in the IIAC. Ryan Izer (Lawler, Iowa/Turkey Valley) was seventh in 2:05.77. Nick Poff (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) finished eighth in the mile in 4:49.73. Chris Hawkins (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.35, the second best time in the IIAC and 17th in the nation. Coe's 4x200-meter relay team of Clevon Catchings (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Bulls Prep), Suell, Demetrius Harper (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) and Anton Jones (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) finished second in 1:33.96. Coe was fourth in the 4x400-meter relay, as Coe's team of Freeborn, Izer, Jacob Feldman (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and Max Johnson finished in 3:36.50.
Blake Standring was fifth in the pole vault at 10' 11 3/4" (3.35m). Hawkins won the triple jump at 45' 10 3/4" (13.99m), the second best jump in the IIAC and 20th in the nation. Robbie Peters (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and Jacob Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) finished third and fourth in the weight throw. Peters had a toss of 52' 11" (16.13m), while Hayes had the 48th best throw in the nation at 51' 8 1/2" (15.76m).
Coe was fourth on the men's side with 73 points, just five points behind Cornell for the team title. The Kohawk women finished seventh with 47 points. Grand View won the women's title with 112.5 points.
The Kohawks return to action next Saturday, as they travel to the Wisconsin-Platteville Invite. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Platteville, Wis. A link to live results is available at CoeAthletics.com.
