ELSAH, Ill. - On the first full day of the 2017 Liberal Arts Championships, the Coe College swimming and diving teams set three school records.
On the one-meter diving board, Erin Horton (San Diego, Calif./Mt.Carmel ) was ninth with a score of 292.15. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Coe's team Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union), Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) and Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) finished second in 1:39.75, breaking the school record. On the men's side, Coe's team of Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ), Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ), Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III) and Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) finished seventh in 1:29.41, the fourth-best time in school history.
Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) was seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.30, the third-best time in school history. On the men's side, Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) was second in 4:36.97. Faidley's time broke his own school record and is the 30th best time in the nation. Markham was 10th in the event in 4:45.58 with the second best time in school history, while Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was 14th in 4:56.54, the sixth-best time in school history.
Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South) was fourth in the 200-yard IM in 2:15.51, the third-best time in school history. On the men's side, Doug Sauer was 13th in 2:01.94, the sixth-best time in school history. Five Kohawks finished in the top 15 of the women's 50-yard freestyle, including a pair in the top five. Freeland was third in 24.93, while her time of 24.87 in the prelims was the third best in school history. Fitzgerald was fifth in 25.17, while turning in a 25.16 in the prelims. Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) was 12th in 25.83, Peter was 13th in 25.89 and Thompson was 14th in 25.91.
In the women's 400-yard Medley Relay, Coe's team of Bundy, Fitzgerald, King and Freeland finished third in 4:01.31. Their time was the second-best in school history and ranks 38th in the nation. On the men's side, Coe's team of Sauer, Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) and Markham broke the school record with their sixth-place finish in 3:35.28.
The Kohawk women are in third place after the second day with 153 points. Franklin is in the lead with 193 points, while Luther is second with 185 points. On the men's side, Coe is sixth with 81 points. Franklin has the lead with 210 points, while Nebraska Wesleyan is second with 169 points.
