ELSAH, Ill. - The Coe College swimming and diving teams won a pair of titles and broke five more school records Friday at the Liberal Arts Championships.
The night started with a bang, as the Kohawk women's 200-yard medley relay won in 1:48.18. Coe's team of Kendall Bundy (Denver, Colo./South), Sam Fitzgerald (Springville, Iowa/Springville), Katie Freeland (Dysart, Iowa/Union) and Brandi Peter (Dubuque, Iowa/ Senior) set the school record in 1:48.18 with the 28th best time in the nation. The Kohawk men set a school record as well in the event, as Doug Sauer, Tucker Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), Nathan Homan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson ) and Joshua Seymour (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic ) finished seventh in 1:38.59. In the men's 400-yard IM, three Kohawks finished in the top 12. Conor Backhaus (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) was sixth in 4:26.78, the second best time in school history. Blake Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was eighth in 4:36.00, while his prelim time of 4:32.31 was the sixth-best time in school history. Phil Cunningham was 12th in 4:38.14.
Katie King (Dysart, Iowa/Union) was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.29, the fourth best time in school history. On the men's side, Andy Cheng (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray) was 14th in 55.53. King then finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.54, the third best time in school history. Katy Appler (Clermont, Iowa/Valley) was 12th in 2:02.12. Coe had the top two times in school history on the men's side, as Corbin Faidley (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Hoover) was sixth in 1:44.72 and Quincy Markham (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan ) was seventh in 1:45.23.
For the third-straight year, Fitzgerald won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.48. Freeland finished fourth in 1:08.01, the second best time in school history. Dangremond was sixth on the men's side in 1:00.46. In the 100-yard backstroke, Bundy was second in 59.87, the second best time in school history. Alanna Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/ West) was ninth in 1:00.73. For the Kohawk men, Sauer was seventh in 53.66. In the prelims, Sauer set the school record in 53.28. Collin Flynn (Racine, Wis./Walden III) was 13th in 55.89. In the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, Bundy, Appler, King and Peter finished sixth in 8:16.25. On the men's side, Coe set the final school record of the night. The Kohawk team of Faidley, Sterns, Tim Bosn (Omaha, Neb./Roncalli Catholic) and Markham finished in 7:14.52.
Heading into the final day, the Kohawk women are in fourth with 313 points. Franklin leads the team race with 438 points, while Luther is second with 363. Coe is just 3.5 points behind Illinois Tech for third place, while holding a 29 point lead over Minnesota-Morris for fifth. The Coe men are fifth with 219 points. Franklin leads the men's race as well with 487 points. Coe is 66 points behind Luther, while holding a one-point lead over Loras.
