STORM LAKE, Iowa - After posting 49 points in the first half Saturday, the Coe College women's basketball team scored just 23 points in the second half in a 79-72 loss to Buena Vista.
The Kohawks got off to a fast start, taking a 13-4 lead in the first 3:47. The Beavers cut the lead to five with 2:42 to play in the quarter, but a 3-pointer by Aleena Hobbs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) started an 8-1 run for the Kohawks in the next 1:26. A jumper and free throw by Sidney Beckman closed the first quarter scoring, as Coe led 25-16 after one frame.
A 3-pointer by Jenna Lehman (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) and jumper by Mickey Hansche (Iowa City, Iowa/City) gave Coe a 35-22 lead with 6:00 to play in the first half. Buena Vista closed the first half by scoring eight of the last 12 points, cutting Coe's lead to 49-40 at the half.
Coe pushed the lead to 10 early in the third quarter, but a jumper by Claudia Larsen with 6:18 left in the quarter started a 13-3 run for the Beavers in the next 4:13, as McKenna Whitehill tied the game on a layup with 2:05 left in the third quarter. Coe hit four free throws in the final :39 of the quarter, taking a 61-57 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lehman hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, giving Coe a 64-57 lead with 9:01 to play. The Beavers responded with a 9-0 run in the next 3:34, as a free throw by Whitehill gave the Beavers a 66-64 lead with 4:55 to play. Buena Vista pushed the lead to give, but a layup by Hobbs with 1:32 to play cut the lead to 71-69. Buena Vista outscored Coe 8-3 in the final 1:18 for the 79-72 victory.
Jordan Holmes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Hobbs led the Kohawks with 19 points apiece, a new career-high for Holmes. Holmes was 5-of-6 from 3-point range, as her 83.3 percent from downtown is tied for second in school history. Hobbs set the school record for career free throws, passing assistant coach Kayla Waskow with 373 career makes. Lehman added 16 points, while Hansche had 14. Lehman now ranks third on the single-season scoring chart with 416 points this season, while Hobbs moved into ninth on the list with 374 points. Lehman moved into sixth on the career 3-pointers list with 105. Hansche is now tied for fourth on the single-season 3-pointers list with 67, while she moved into 18th in NCAA Division III history with 295 career 3-pointers.
Hobbs had a game-high nine rebounds, while Lehman and Rylee Claussen (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) added seven and four respectively. Hobbs moved into a tie for sixth in school history with 591 rebounds. Lehman had a game-high five assists, while Hobbs and Hansche each had three. Holmes and Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) had a pair of dimes apiece. Hansche moved into a tie for eighth in school history with her 104th career game played, while Hobbs and Lehman moved into a tie for ninth in school history with 77 career starts. Hansche now ranks second in school history with 3,066 minutes played, while Hobbs and Lehman became the 13th and 14th players in school history to surpass 2,300 career minutes played.
Coe was 22-of-45 (48.9%) from the field and 12-of-25 (48%) from 3-point range. Coe has now connected on 197 3-pointers this year, the third most in school history. The Beavers were 25-of-60 (41.7%) from the floor and 5-of-18 (27.8%) from downtown. Coe was 16-of-24 (66.7%) at the free throw line, while the Beavers were 24-of-43 (55.8%) at the charity stripe. Buena Vista had a 34-12 advantage in the paint, 25-4 in points off turnovers and 22-2 in bench points. Coe led for 31:23. The loss snapped a string of eight-straight victories over Buena Vista.
