STORM LAKE, Iowa - It's not crazy. It's sports. Less than a month after Buena Vista rallied from 17 down to hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Coe College, the Kohawks returned the favor with a 20 point rally and a 3-point buzzer beater of their own.
The Beavers raced out to a 13-5 lead in the first 7:31. Coe responded with a 13-7 run in the next 4:00, as a pair of free throws by Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) with 8:09 left in the half cut the lead to 20-18. Buena Vista had another answer, as the Beavers went on a 9-2 run, taking a 29-20 lead with 4:04 left in the half. Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) hit a 3-pointer with 3:15 left in the half to cut the lead to 31-25. The Beavers then closed the half on a 10-2 run, as Coe didn't hit another field goal, to take a 41-27 lead at the half.
Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) hit a 3-pointer to start the scoring in the second half, but Buena Vista scored the next nine points to take a 50-30 lead with 17:55 t play. Buena Vista's lead remained at 20 with 12:47 to play when Coe scored seven-straight points to cut the lead to 13 with 10:05 to play. Buena Vista outscored Coe 12-5 in the next 2:28, taking a 75-55 lead with 7:20 to play. Then it happened. A layup by Hunter Pflughaupt (Walker, Iowa/North-Linn) with 7:01 left started a 12-0 run, as Pflughaupt ended the run on a 3-pointer with 4:30 to play.
The Beavers had the lead at 11 with 2:41 to play, but Pflughaupt hit a 3-pointer to start another Coe run, this time 12-3 in a 1:25 span. Shedeck hit a 3-pointer with :48 left, cutting the lead to 83-81. Thomas Wisecup hit a pair of free throws with :22 left, as the Beavers pushed the lead to 85-81. Coe missed a 3-pointer with :14 left, but Vonderhaar grabbed the rebound and scored, making it a one-possession game again. After a Kohawk foul, David Jeffries missed the front end of a one-and-one, as Vonderhaar grabbed the rebound. As time expired, Shedeck drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key, completing the comeback and giving the Kohawks the 86-85 victory.
Pflughaupt led the Kohawks with a career-high 20 points, while Vonderhaar added 18. Shedeck finished with 17 points. Pflughaupt hit six 3-pointers, tied for the second-most in school history. Vonderhaar led the Kohawks with seven rebounds, while Winker and Pflughaupt each had a career-high four boards. Shedeck surpassed 400 career rebounds in the game, while Vonderhaar moved into a tie for seventh in school history with 335 rebounds. Vonderhaar is now tied with his brother, JT, in defensive rebounds. Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) had a game-high seven assists, while Shedeck added four. Shedeck moved into fourth in school history with 67 career blocked shots. Vonderhaar moved into 10th in school history with 2,372 career minutes played.
Coe was 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the field and 14-of-36 (38.9%) from downtown. Buena Vista was 32-of-53 (60.4%) from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Coe was 16-of-21 (76.2%) at the free throw line, while the Beavers were 16-of-24 (66.7%) at the charity stripe. Buena Vista had a 46-22 advantage in the paint and 15-8 in points off turnovers. Coe had a 15-4 advantage in second chance points and 49-18 in bench scoring. Coe's 59 points in the second half are the most in a half since 1997.
