DUBUQUE, Iowa - An early field goal gave Coe the lead on their opening possession Saturday, as it would prove to be all the Kohawks needed in a 38-13 win over Loras.  The win improved the Kohawks to 7-1 on the year and 5-1 in the Iowa Conference.Coe drove 46-yards on its opening drive, finishing with a 35-yard field goal by junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus).  Neither team could put any more points on the scoreboard the rest of the quarter, as Coe led 3-0 when the teams switched sides of the field.

With just three points in the opening quarter, the Kohawks lit up the scoreboard in the second quarter.  Continuing a drive from the end of the first quarter, sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) marched the Kohawks down field, as he dove in from one-yard out to put the Kohawks ahead 10-0.  Boyle was 5-for-6 passing for 34-yards, while rushing five-times for 19 yards on the drive.

Loras answered the Kohawk touchdown with one of its own.  Brandon Decker rushed in from three-yards out, cutting the Kohawk lead to three with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter.

Boyle wasted no time orchestrating another Kohawk scoring drive.  This time around, it was a seven-play, 64-yard drive that lasted just over three minutes.  Boyle was 4-for-5 for 59-yards on the drive, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to freshman Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana).

After forcing a Duhawk punt with 2:15 to play in the first half, Boyle worked his magic once again.  Boyle completed four passes for 48 yards, finishing with a five-yard pass to junior Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon) that put the Kohawks ahead 24-7 with :41 to play in the first half.  Boyle threw for 117 yards in the second quarter alone.

Loras looked to make it a game early in the second half, as they scored on the first play from scrimmage after a 54-yard kick return.  A 26-yard pass from Vaughn Gesing to Wait Lebuz made it 24-13 Kohawks after Loras was unable to convert the extra point attempt.

While the Kohawks weren't able to score in the third quarter, they added 14 more points in the final frame.  A 6-yard run by Takes increased the Kohawk lead to 31-13 with 13:22 to play in the game.  The Kohawks tacked on one final touchdown on a three-yard pass from Boyle to Takes.  Coe had a drive late in the game that resulted in a fumble at the Duhawk one-yard line.

As a team, Coe tallied 28 first downs, while holding Loras to just 12.  The Kohawk defense was as good as advertised, holding the Duhawks to just 35 rushing yards and 163 yards of total offense.  Coe rolled up 463 yards of offense, with 338 of that coming in the air.  Coe dominated the clock in the second half, holding onto the ball for 23:51 of the 30 minutes played.

Senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) rushed for a game-high 96 yards on 20 carries.  He also finished with four receptions for 26 yards.  Boyle rushed 13 times for 17 yards, while completing 25-of-39 passes for 338 yards.  He continued his string of 273-straight passing attempts without an interception.

Senior Robert Welborn (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) had a game-high seven receptions for 69 yards.  Takes finished with five catches for 41 yards, while junior tight end Ryan Jones (Harpers Ferry, Iowa/Waukon) had two receptions for 53 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a team-high six tackles, including a sack for eight yards loss.  Sophomore Jacob Breitbach (Panora, Iowa/Panorama) also had six tackles, while sophomore Tyler Hemry (West Union, Iowa/North Fayette) added five, including two sacks.

The Kohawks will take their 7-1 record on the road for the final time next Saturday when they travel to Storm Lake.  Coe will face Buena Vista at noon.
