CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The lead switched hands four times in the final :31 Wednesday night, as Loras College hit a layup with :02 left to beat Coe 84-83 at Eby Fieldhouse.
Coe led for most of the first half, with Hunter Pflughaupt (Walker, Iowa/North-Linn) hitting a jumper with 13:47 to play in the first half to take a 13-9 lead. The Kohawk lead stayed at four with 11:05 left when Loras scored six-straight in less than a minute to take a 20-18 lead with 10:02 left in the half. Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) tied the game at 24-24 with 6:22 left, as Coe went on a 9-2 run to take a 31-26 lead with 4:35 left in the half. Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) hit a 3-pointer with :26 left in the half, giving him 17 points in the first half, but Loras hit a free throw with :05 left to cut Coe's lead to 46-40 at the break.
Loras opened the second half on a 10-2 run in the first 3:23, taking a 50-48 lead on a 3-pointer by Demond George with 16:37 to play. Coe answered with a 3-pointer by Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) with 15:20 to play, taking a 51-50 lead. It would be Coe's last lead until :31 left in the game. With 7:45 to play, Loras scored six-straight points to take a 73-65 lead with 6:52 remaining. Coe would use a 7-0 run in a 2:09 span after that, as a layup by Winker with 3:42 left cut the lead to one.
The teams traded baskets until Vonderhaar hit back-to-back shots to give Coe an 81-80 lead with :31 left. Ryan DiCanio answered with a layup with :24 left, as the Duhawks took an 82-81 lead. Coe took its final lead with :10 left, as Pflughaupt hit a layup to give Coe an 83-82 lead. The final points came with :02 left, as Danny Quinn hit the game-winning layup.
Vonderhaar led the Kohawks with 24 points, as he became the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He joins his brother, JT Vonderhaar '15, as the only brothers in school history to both score over 1,000 points. JT scored 1,042 career points. Pflughaupt and Winker both scored 10 points, tying a career-high for Winker. Hook scored nine points, while Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage) had eight. Vonderhaar had eight rebounds, as he moved into fifth in school history with 340 career defensive rebounds. Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) moved into a tie for fifth in school history with 139 defensive rebounds this season with six boards tonight.
Haaland had five assists, as he became the 15th player in school history to have 100 assists in a season. Hook added a career-high four assists, while Vonderhaar and Winker had three and two dimes apiece. Shedeck had three blocked shots, as he moved into a tie for third with 34 blocks this season. Spencer Williams (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) tied a career-high with a pair of blocked shots. Vonderhaar became the ninth player in school history to play over 2,400 career minutes.
Coe was 29-of-54 (53.7%) from the field and 9-of-17 (52.9%) from downtown. Loras was 29-of-60 (48.3%) from the floor and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc. Loras was 18-of-23 (78.3%) at the free throw line, while Coe was 16-of-23 (69.6%) at the charity stripe. Loras held a 42-30 advantage in the paint.
The Kohawks (9-15, 5-10) wrap up the season on Saturday, as they host Dubuque (10-14, 7-8 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse. Coe will honor its four seniors before tipoff.
