KALAMAZOO, Mich. - 36th-ranked Kalamazoo took an early lead in doubles and held on for a 5-4 win over 35th-ranked Coe College Saturday morning at the Markin Center.
The Hornets earned the first win, as Allen Vinson and Daniel Henry beat Nate Ackert (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) and Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) 8-4 at number three doubles. Coe evened the match at number one doubles, as Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Josh Pudlo (Lakewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) beat Elan Dantus and Braden Metzler 9-7. At number two doubles, Eric De Witt and Zack Ray beat James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Luke Ford (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) 9-7.
Kalamazoo extended its lead at number one singles, as Metzler, ranked 15th in the nation, beat Anderson, ranked 32nd in the nation 6-1, 6-3. At number four singles, Danus beat 48th-ranked Bernt 6-2, 6-3 before Henry locked up the match for the Hornets with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Ackert at number two singles. McManus beat Noah Karoub 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 6-1 at number three singles, while Evgeny Pakhomenko (Moscow, Russia) beat Ray 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 at number six singles. The final win came at number five singles, as Pudlo beat Vinson 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
The Kohawks (3-3, 1-0 IIAC) return to action on Saturday, as they host Carthage (3-4) and Loras (2-0, 0-0 IIAC) at the Clark Racquet Center. Coe will face Carthage at 10 a.m. and Loras at 2 p.m. A link to live video will be available at CoeAthletics.com.
