CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A steal in the final seconds sealed the final victory in Eby Fieldhouse history Saturday, as Coe College closed the season with an 82-80 win over Dubuque.
Dubuque held an early three point lead after a long ball by TJ Lake, but Coe rattled off a 9-2 run in the next 5:53, taking an 11-7 lead with 12:04 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Trevor Haaland (Osage, Iowa/Osage). Neither team would lead by more than four until the Spartans went on a 10-2 run late in the half, taking a 43-36 lead with 1:47 to play in the opening half. Marshall Shedeck (Oxford Junction, Iowa/North Cedar) hit a free throw and jumper with :34 left, cutting the Spartan lead to 43-39 at the break.
After a jumper by Jamaree Atwater to start the half, a 3-pointer by Matt Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) started an 11-4 run by the Kohawks, as Shedeck closed the run with a 3-pointer with 17:06 to play, giving Coe a 50-49 lead. Dubuque quickly rattled off eight-straight points, taking a 57-50 lead with 14:10 to play. Coe trailed 60-53 with 12:30 to play when a jumper by Calvin Winker (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) started a 9-0 run in 2:03. A pair of free throws by Vonderhaar with 10:04 left in the game gave Coe a 62-60 lead.
Dubuque led 66-65 with 8:07 to play when Winker hit a jumper to start a 6-0 run. Austin Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) gave Coe a 71-66 lead with 5:35 to play. Dubuque cut the lead to 72-70 on a jumper by Atwater with 4:56 to play, but Coe scored the next eight points, including a dunk from Shedeck to take an 80-70 lead with 1:50 remaining. Dubuque went on a 10-1 run in the next 1:26, cutting the lead to 81-80. Hunter Pflughaupt (Walker, Iowa/North-Linn) hit a free throw with 82-80 lead with :15 left. Shedeck stole the ball from Atwater with :05 left to seal the final victory at Eby Fieldhouse.
Vonderhaar had a team-high 21 points, while Haaland and Matt Meyer (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) had nine points apiece. Shedeck put together one of the best stat lines in Eby Fieldhouse history, finishing with 18 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists (career-high), five blocked shots (career-high), three steals and no turnovers in 30 minutes. Shedeck tied the school record with 39 blocked shots on the season, while moving into fifth in school history with 341 career defensive rebounds. Winker had a career-high six rebounds, while Vonderhaar had five. Tommy Hook (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) had three assists, while Pflughaupt, Vonderhaar and Haaland each had two.
Coe was 29-of-62 (46.8%) from the field and 10-of-24 (41.7%) from 3-point range. The Spartans were 29-of-67 (43.3%) from the floor and 13-of-28 (46.4%) from downtown. Coe was 14-of-21 at the free throw line, while the Spartans were 9-of-13 (69.2%). Coe held a 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers, while the Kohawk bench outscored Dubuque's 26-5.
The Kohawks honored their four seniors (Josh Jirak (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana), Pflughaupt, Shedeck and Vonderhaar) before the game. Coe finished the season 10-15 overall and 6-10 in the Iowa Conference.
