ORLANDO, Fla. - The 37th-ranked Coe College men's tennis team opened the spring trip on Sunday with a pair of wins over John Carroll and Oglethorpe.
Coe led 2-1 after doubles play in the 6-3 victory against John Carroll. At number two doubles, James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Nate Greiner (Polk City, Iowa/North Polk) beat Gustavo Garcia and Dillon O'Brien 8-3. Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and Luke Ford (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) followed that with an 8-2 win over Tyler Cole and Nick Sicilano at number three doubles.
In singles play, Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar), ranked 32nd in the nation, beat Jad Abdul-Aal 6-1, 6-2 at number one singles, while McManus beat Garcia 6-1, 6-2 at number two singles. Alex Bernt, ranked 48th in the nation, beat Sicilano 6-2, 7-5 at number four singles. The victory was the 70th career singles win for Bernt. Chad Moklestad (Boone, Iowa/Boone) closed the meet with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Scot Adsit at number six singles, as he earned his 60th career victory.
The Kohawks raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play in the 8-1 win over Oglethorpe to close the day. Josh Pudlo (Lakewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Ford beat Richard Johnson and Michael Allen 8-4 at number one doubles. Anderson and Nate Greiner downed Michael Santaloci and Zoe Raymond 8-6 at number two doubles, while Bernt and McManus beat Jacob Bertram and Dustin Bowie 8-4 at number three doubles.
Anderson was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Bowie at number one singles, while McManus beat Johnson 6-4, 6-2 at number two singles. Ford picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Santaloci at number four singles, while Evgeny Pakhomenko (Moscow, Russia) beat Matthew Magee 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles. Greiner closed the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over John Lieng at number six singles.
The Kohawks (7-3) return to action on Monday for a pair of matches against Morningside and Wittenberg in the Orlando area.
