AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The first pitch and the last pitch the Kohawks saw against Montclair State in the opening game went for home runs, as Coe College split with the Red Hawks.
The Kohawks started the scoring early, putting up seven runs in the first inning. Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) opened the game with an inside the park home run to center field on the first pitch. Blake Lishka (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) drove an 0-2 pitch through the right side to plate Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and Grant Henning (DeWitt, Iowa/Central DeWitt). Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) then hit a triple to right center, as Lishka and Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) scored. The final two runs of the inning came on a two-run home run by Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), as Alvarado scored as well.
Montclair State cut into the lead with three runs in the second inning, but Coe answered in the bottom half as Brierton scored on a wild pitch. The Red Hawks plated four runs in the third inning, as Coe's lead was cut to 8-7. The Kohawks extended the lead to 9-7 as Kaplan singled to center field in the fourth inning to drive in Brierton.
The Red Hawks tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, but Coe wasted no time getting the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. DeLaney singled up the middle to plate Arp. Isaac Evans (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) then singled up the middle to drive in DeLaney before Lishka singled to center field to score Henning. Montclair State scored four runs in the top of the seventh, taking a 13-12 lead. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Henning was intentionally walked. Three pitches later, Brierton crushed a grand slam over the scoreboard in left field to give the Kohawks the 16-13 victory.
Brierton led the Kohawks with four hits, while DeLaney and Lishka each had three. Arp added a pair of hits. Brierton scored a team-high four runs, while DeLaney and Henning crossed the plate three times each. Arp touched the plate twice. Brierton had a team-high four RBI, while Lishka brought in three runs. DeLaney, Alvarado and Arp each brought in a pair of runs. Michael Golinski (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) earned the win, throwing just one pitch. Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) struck out eight, while giving up 14 hits and six runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings of relief work.
In the nightcap, Montclair State scored a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the 4-0 victory. Two of the four runs were unearned. Kaplan, Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) and Tyler Dralle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) each had a hit for the Kohawks. Jack Greene (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up two unearned runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Greene struck out five, walked four and allowed a hit.
The Kohawks (2-1) return to action on Tuesday, as they face Saint Joseph's in Auburndale, Fla.
