ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The 37th-ranked Coe College men's tennis team completed the perfect spring trip on Thursday, as the Kohawks beat Wheaton 6-3.
It was a big victory for Coe Head Coach Eric Rodgers, as it was his 500th win as men's tennis coach at Coe College. Rodgers has over 700 combined wins between coaching the men and women at Coe.
Coe held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At number two doubles, Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Nate Greiner (Polk City, Iowa/North Polk) beat Jeremiah Yi and Andrew Bristol 8-2. At number three doubles, James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Nate Ackert (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) beat Dane Paulsen and Josh Cheng 8-2.
McManus earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Yi at number three singles, while Josh Pudlo (Lakewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cheng at number four singles. Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus), ranked 48th in the nation, beat Andrew Torok 6-1, 6-0 at number five singles. The final win came at number six singles, as Evgeny Pakhomenko (Moscow, Russia) downed Karl Wenzel 6-3, 6-0.
The Kohawks (12-3) return to action March 17 at 23rd-ranked Gustavus. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
