NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Junior Chris Hawkins (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) finished ninth at the NCAA National Track & Field Championships in the long jump on Friday.
Hawkins started the event with a jump of 21' 6" (6.55m). On his second jump, he bumped his distance to 21' 10" (6.65m). His third jump was his best of the day, as he went 22' 6 1/4" (6.86m). On his fourth jump, he went 21' 11" (6.68m). Hawkins scratched on his final two jumps, as he finished ninth at 22' 6 1/4" (6.86m). Hawkins missed earning All-American honors by a 1/4", as Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Mackenzie James was eighth at 22' 6 1/2" (6.87m). Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Jerry Williams won the event at 24' 1 1/2" (7.35m).
On the women's side, senior Cassie Hocker (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) qualified in the 60-meter dash, but was forced to withdraw before the event due to injury. Hocker entered with the fourth-best time in the nation at 7.69.
The Kohawks open the outdoor season April 1 at the Central Invite in Pella.
