LA CROSSE, Wis. - Freshman Cole Erickson (Mediapolis, Iowa/Mediapolis) finished sixth at 149 pounds at the NCAA National Championships, as he earned All-American honors.
Erickson opened the day with a win by fall in 6:50 against Shaun Wilson of Waynesburg. Erickson led 7-2 late in the third period when he recorded a takedown with :15, putting Wilson straight to his back.
In the consolation semifinals, Erickson faced second-seeded Seth Lansberry of Lycoming. Erickson took an early 1-0 lead with an escape in the second period. In the third period, Lansberry notched an escape :18 into the period to even the match. With :37 left, Lansberry had a takedown to seal the match. Lansberry was awarded a point for riding time to win 4-1.
Erickson faced third-seeded Sam Schneider of Ithaca in the fifth-place match, the second time the two had met in the tournament. Erickson started the match with a takedown :22 into the match and recorded a four-point nearfall seven seconds later for a 6-0 lead. With 1:39 left in the first period, Schneider used a reversal to cut the lead to 6-2 before winning by fall in 1:31.
Erickson finishes his freshman season with a 15-9 overall record. He became the 63rd All-American in program history, as Coe has had an All-American for 15-straight years.
