ST. PETER, Minn. - The 36th-ranked Coe College men's tennis team suffered its first loss in nearly a month on Friday, as 19th-ranked Gustavus beat the Kohawks 8-1.
In doubles play, 21st-ranked Mohanad Alhouni and Patrick Whaling beat Josh Pudlo (Lakewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Luke Ford (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) 8-4. At number two doubles, Tommy Entwistle and Chase Johnson downed Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Nate Greiner (Polk City, Iowa/North Polk) 8-3. Coe's lone win came at number three doubles, as Nate Ackert (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) and James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) beat David Hagberg and Zach Ekstein 8-4.
The number one singles match featured a pair of nationally-ranked players, as third-ranked Alhouni beat 32nd-ranked Anderson 6-2, 6-4. At number two singles, Ekstein beat Ackert 6-4, 6-3. Whaling, ranked 21st in the country, beat McManus 6-3, 6-4 at number three singles, while Entwistle beat Pudlo 6-0, 7-6 at number four singles. Johnson beat Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus), ranked 48th in the nation, 6-3, 6-4 at number five singles, while Yassine Derbani beat Ford 6-4, 6-3 at number six singles.
The Kohawks (12-4) return to action March 25 at the Clark Racquet Center for a pair of matches against Nebraska Wesleyan and Central. Coe will face the Prairie Wolves at 9 a.m., followed by the Dutch at noon.
