WEBSTER GROVES, Mo./BELLEVILLE, Ill. - The Coe College women's tennis team opened the day with a 7-1 win over Webster before dropping an 8-1 match to ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
Coe opened doubles play with a 2-1 lead against the Gorloks. At number one doubles, Lauren French (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian) and Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) beat Monica Behrle and Madison Watts 8-2. The victory was the 20th doubles win of the year for French. Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) and Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) beat Sara Rice and Jes Steffens-Willis 8-0 at number two doubles.
In singles play, Resnick earned an 8-2 win over Behrle at number one, while French beat Watts 8-1 at number two singles. It was the fifth-straight win for French and her 20th singles win of the year and 40th total win of the season. Lasecki beat Rice 8-5 at number three singles, while Fosler beat Steffens-Willis 8-2 at number four for her 30th career singles victory. Coe's final win came at number six singles, as Ella White (Roseville, Minn./St. Anthony Village) won by retirement against Stephanie Lass.
In the nightcap, the Bears beat the Kohawks 8-1. At number one doubles, French and Resnick gave Rebecca Ho and Kaylan Griffith all they could handle. The Bear duo was ranked third in the nation and just edged the Kohawk pair 8-6. Coe's lone win came at number two singles, as French beat Griffith 7-6 (7-0), 6-4. It was French's sixth-straight singles win.
The Kohawks (13-6) return to action on Saturday, as they face Wisconsin-La Crosse (15-2) and Augustana (16-2) in Rock Island, Ill. Coe will face the Eagles at 12 p.m. and the Vikings at 3:30 p.m.
