CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Thomas Simon (Morton Grove, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) hit his first career home run in the bottom of the 11th inning Sunday, as Coe College beat Nebraska Wesleyan 7-6 in the series opener.
The Prairie Wolves started the scoring in the first inning off a two-out error. Coe evened the score in the bottom of the first, as Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) singled to right field with two outs. A single up the middle by Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) drove in Brierton to tie the game. Nebraska Wesleyan took the lead again in the second on a bunt single. The Prairie Wolves extended their lead to 5-1 in the third inning on three runs on five hits.
Coe got a run back in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Tyler Dralle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) stole second and scored on a single down the right field line by Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde). The Prairie Wolves scored again in the fourth, but that would be the final hit and run of the game for Nebraska Wesleyan. In the bottom of the fourth, DeLaney singled down the right field line, driving in Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin).
The Kohawks picked up a pair of runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, Alvarado singled through the right side, plating Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Burns. In the bottom of the seventh, Grant Henning (DeWitt, Iowa/Central DeWitt) singled through the left side, as Nolan Arp scored to tie the game. The hit was the 100th of Henning's career. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the 11th, as Thomas Simon blasted the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall to give Coe the 7-6 victory.
DeLaney, Kaplan and Alvarado led the Kohawks with three hits apiece, a career-high for Kaplan and Alvarado. Burns and Arp each had two hits, while Alvarado drove in a career-high two runs. Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) earned a no-decision on the mound, as he struck out eight and walked one in six innings. Jacobson gave up six runs (five earned) on 12 hits. Jacobson moved into 10th on Coe's career strikeouts list with 121. Michael Golinski (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) struck out four and walked one in 2.1 innings pitched, while Lucas Robbins (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) struck out two and walked one in 1.2 innings pitched. Andrew Schmit (Ames, Iowa/Ames) earned the win, as he improved to 2-0 with an inning pitched. Schmit struck out one of the four batters he faced.
The second game of the doubleheader was halted after seven innings due to darkness with the score tied 2-2. Coe and Nebraska Wesleyan will finish the second game of the series at 1 p.m. Monday at Bill Quinby Field at Daniels Park. The series finale will follow upon completion of the halted game.
