PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of the season on Saturday, as the Kohawks competed at the Central Invite.
Robbie Peters (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) opened the day with a ninth-place finish in the discus throw with a toss of 134' 2" (40.89m). In the hammer throw, Tieranny Keahna (Tama, Iowa/South Tama) was eighth with a throw of 116' 5" (35.49m). Keahna then won the discus throw with a toss of 124' 3" (37.88m), which was the fifth best in the IIAC and the 41st best in the nation. Madison Arechiga (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village) was ninth in the event at 102' 9" (31.31m). In the hammer throw, Peters was third at 170' 2" (51.86m), which was the best throw in the IIAC and 13th in the nation. Jacob Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) was eighth with a toss of 152' 1" (46.35m), the fifth best throw in the league.
Blake Standring was seventh in the pole vault at 10' 11 3/4" (3.35m), while Christina Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won the event on the women's side at 10' (3.05m). Brown's height ranks second in the Iowa Conference. Keahna was third in the shot put with a throw of 38' 9" (11.81m), which was fourth best in the league. Arechiga was ninth in the shot put at 33' 9 1/4" (10.29m). CJ Nelson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) was seventh in the triple jump at 38' 3 1/2" (11.67m), while Kassandra Bain (Kingsley, Iowa/Woodbury Central) was fourth in the javelin throw at 91' 8" (27.93m). Peters took eighth in the shot put with a throw of 44' 4" (13.51m), while Hayes was eighth with a toss of 42' 8" (13.00m).
Coe was second in the women's 4x100-meter relay, as the Kohawk team of Carlyn Cole (Baldwin City, Kansas/Baldwin), Kyna Smith (Baldwin City, Kan./Baldwin), Amanda Brummet (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) and Cassie Hocker (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) finished in 50.36, the fourth-best time in the league. On the men's side, Coe's team of Anton Jones (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville), Chris Hawkins (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius), Clevon Catchings (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Bulls Prep) and Erik Franklin (Greeley, Colo./West) finished fifth in 43.70, the fifth best time in the IIAC. Josephine Bautch (Reedsburg, Wisconsin/Reedsburg) was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.92, while Dana Koester (Wheatland, Iowa/Calamus-Wheatland) finished 10th in 1:05.53. On the men's side, three Kohawks finished in the top 10, led by Beau Freeborn (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska)'s fourth-place finish in 51.00. Clayton Birkes (Columbia, Mo./Southern Boone Country R-I) was seventh in 51.62, while Hunter Hartshorne (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive) was ninth in 52.02.
Hocker won the 100-meter dash in 12.44, the third best time in the IIAC and 20th best in the nation. Cole was fifth in the event in 13.14. Catchings was eighth in the 100-meter dash in 11.43. Katie Guinane (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) was eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:36.56. On the men's side, Ryan Izer (Lawler, Iowa/Turkey Valley) was third in 1:58.10, while Ben Nelson was 10th in 2:01.92. Kelsie Coates (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:13.63. Landon Kraus (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) was ninth on the men's side in 59.63, while Max Johnson was 10th in 1:00.80.
Catchings was third in the 200-meter dash in 22.98, the fifth best time in the Iowa Conference. Birkes was ninth in the event in 23.44. The Kohawk men finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay, as Coe's team of Freeborn, Izer, Dray Schreiber (Buffalo City, Wis./Cochrane Fountain City) and Jacob Feldman (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) crossed in 3:30.03.
The Kohawk women finished fifth with 66 points, holding a five-point lead over William Penn. Clarke won the women's title with 131.16 points. The Kohawk men finished seventh with 42 points. Simpson won the men's team title with 173.5 points.
Coe returns to action next Saturday at two different meets. The Kohawks will be competing at the Cornell Open in Mount Vernon and the Norse Relays in Decorah.
