CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A six-run eighth inning sent the Coe College Baseball team to an 11-7 win over Loras Tuesday, as the Kohawks beat the Duhawks for the 10th-straight time.
The Kohawks opened the scoring in the first inning, as Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) tripled on the second pitch of the game and scored on a wild pitch. Coe added to the scoring in the third inning, as DeLaney tied a school record with his second triple of the game. DeLaney became the fourth player in school history to hit two triples in a game. Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) walked and moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) singled to right center to plate DeLaney and Alvarado.
Coe added two more runs in the fourth inning, including a run on the second pitch of the inning. Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) hit his second home run of the season, this one to left field, to give Coe a 4-0 lead. DeLaney then reached on a fielder's choice with one out, as Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) scored to give Coe a 5-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Loras scored four unearned runs on four hits and two Kohawk errors. The Duhawks tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single.
The Kohawk offense exploded in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on five hits, while capitalizing on a pair of Duhawk errors. Brierton singled through the right side, as he drove in Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) to give Coe the lead. Liam Fitzpatrick (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) then drilled an 0-2 pitch to center field for his first career hit, as he drove in Isaac Evans (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert). Brierton then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Henry (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy). A double down the right field line by DeLaney plated Henry and Cameron Frazier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson). With two outs, Jacobson singled to left center, as he drove in DeLaney for Coe's final run. Loras scored twice on a pair of Kohawk errors in the top of the ninth, but couldn't get any closer.
DeLaney and Brierton led the Kohawks with three hits apiece, as DeLaney reached base for the 19th-straight game. Alvarado and Jacobson each had a pair of hits, while Burns had a hit to extend his hitting streak to seven games. DeLaney drove in a game-high three runs, while Burns drove in a pair. DeLaney scored three times, while Brierton crossed the plate twice.
