The Beavers controlled the first quarter of action, although neither team could put up any points. Coe finished the first quarter with six yards of offense on just six plays. The Beavers tallied 90 yards of offense on 18 plays. Coe was only able to keep possession for 3:36 in the opening frame.
Buena Vista wasted no time scoring in the second quarter, but a big defensive stand by the Kohawks inside the Coe five-yard line limited the Beavers to just a field goal, as Zach Kaufman connected from 20-yards out with 12:36 to play in the half.
Coe tried to answer back with a field goal of its own, but sophomore Elliott Rausa's (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) 45-yard attempt came up short. The Kohawks drove 34-yard on nine plays before the miss.
The Kohawks shot themselves in the foot on the next drive, as they forced the Beavers into a punting situation on fourth and one from the Coe 41 yard line. The Kohawks were penalized for having 12 men on the field during the play, bringing live back into the Beavers with the 15-yard penalty. Buena Vista scored five plays later, after converting a third and 13 along the way. The score moved it to 10-0 in favor of the guest. Coe tried to answer to end the half, but were stopped on fourth and nine at the Beaver 47 as time expired.
Just like last week, the Kohawks answered quickly in the second half. After driving 66-yards on 12 plays, Rausa came in for a 19-yard field goal attempt on fourth and goal from the one yard line. The Kohawks had been stuffed on the previous three plays, all from inside the five yard line. Rausa's kick with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter made it 10-3 Buena Vista.
After back-to-back punts, the Kohawks took over at their own two yard line, thanks in part to a 33-yard punt by Jake Vaughan for the Beavers. As Coe did to Luther last week in the same situation, Buena Vista forced the Kohawks into a safety after two attempts to escape the shadows of their own end zone. The safety made it 12-3 in favor of Buena Vista. A Beaver punt into the Coe end zone ended the third quarter.
Buena Vista forced a three-and-out on Coe's first drive of the fourth quarter, but just three plays later senior Kyle Brockmeyer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) intercepted a pass from Buena Vista's Matt Pearey at the Coe 40 yard line. The Kohawks quickly went to work, scoring on a seven-yard pass from freshman Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) to senior Kelvin Lee (Solon, Iowa/Solon). Rausa's extra point made it 12-10 Buena Vista with 9:26 to play.
The Beavers quickly answered with a score of their own, as they took the next possession 71-yards on just eight plays in 3:27 to make it 19-10 with 5:54 to play.
Coe's next drive started with a 45-yard pass from Boyle to sophomore Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus). The Kohawks were able to get down to the 17-yard line, but a wide receiver reverse pass from Lee to Ratchford was picked off by Rahn Franklin Junior of Buena Vista in the end zone. The Beavers were able to run out the remaining 4:31 of the clock from that point on.
Boyle and junior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) both finished with 16 carries for 64 yards. They were the only two players to rush the ball for the Kohawks. Ratchford caught four passes for a game-high 96 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) broke the single-game school record with 22 tackles. The previous record was 20, held by Adam Hocker against Simpson in 2001. Harrison's 13 solo tackles ties Hocker for second all-time, falling one short of Brent Dill's 14 against Upper Iowa in 2000. Harrison also added a sack and two tackles-for-loss.
Junior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) added 12 tackles for the Kohawks. Brockmeyer finished with nine tackles and three pass break-ups.
Coe will be off next week before finishing the season Nov. 15 at Dubuque.
