INDIANOLA, Iowa - Thomas Schaedel (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) tossed seven shutout innings, while the Kohawk offense scored seven runs on 12 hits in Coe College's 7-2 win over Simpson College in the series opener.
On the first pitch of the game, Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) doubled to left center for his 10th double of the season. Just four pitches later, Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) tripled to center field to plate DeLaney. It was the second triple of the year for Alvarado. On the next pitch, Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) singled up the middle to drive in Alvarado. A sacrifice fly by Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) brought in Burns to give Coe a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Kohawks added to the total in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Alvarado hit his eighth double of the year to left field to start the inning. With one out, Jacobson singled through the left side to plate Alvarado. With two outs, Burns scored on a balk. In the top of the sixth inning, Alvarado singled through the left side with two outs to plate DeLaney.
Simpson scored its first run in the eighth inning without getting a hit. Coe earned the run back in the top of the ninth. Burns singled to right field, as he drove in Alvarado for Coe's final run. The Storm added a run in the bottom of the ninth on two hits.
Alvarado tied a career-high with three hits, while DeLaney, Burns, Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and Jack Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) each had a pair of hits. The two hits tied a career-high for Strellner. Alvarado tied a career-high with three runs scored, while DeLaney and Burns each scored twice. Burns, Alvarado and Jacobson each drove in two runs. DeLaney reached base for the 25th-straight game, while extending his hitting-streak to eight games. Brierton now has a hit in seven-straight games.
Thomas Schaedel remained perfect on the bump, as he struck out four and walked one in seven innings. Schaedel allowed just five hits and didn't give up a run. Lucas Robbins (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) tossed the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Robbins struck out a pair in his 15th appearance of the season, tied for the 10th most in school history.
