CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cornell College scored four unearned runs on three Kohawk errors in the eighth inning, as the Rams beat Coe College 4-3 to win the Bremner Cup All-Sports series between the two rivals for the first time in the history of the cup.
The Kohawks started the scoring in the second inning. Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, as he drove in Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) for the first run. Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) followed with a sacrifice fly of his own, as he plated Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) for the second run of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cornell started the inning as Walker Breard reached on a dropped fly ball. After back-to-back fly balls, the Rams scored four runs on two hits and two more Kohawk errors. Cornell took a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning, having just one extra base hit that came in the first inning. With one out in the ninth, Dan Urban (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Conant) hit his first career home run to left field, but that would be the only run the Kohawks could get.
The loss to the Rams was just the second in the last 20 meetings between the two rivals. Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) led the Kohawks with two hits. Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, while Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) had a hit to extend his streak to 11 games. DeLaney has now reached base in 30-straight games, as he hit the 50-hit mark for the season.
Jack Greene (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) had a no decision in 7.2 innings pitched. Greene gave up two unearned runs on four hits and seven walks, while striking out six. Lucas Robbins (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) suffered the loss, as he dropped to 2-4 on the year. Robbins gave up two unearned runs on a walk and fielder's choice with an error. Robbins made his 17th appearance of the season, tied for the fourth-most in school history. Ben Jacobson recorded the final out, while giving up a hit. It was the 43rd career appearance for Jacobson, tied for the ninth-most in school history.
The Kohawks (19-14, 11-9 IIAC) return to action on Sunday, as they host Iowa Wesleyan (13-22). First pitch has been moved up to 12 p.m. at Bill Quinby Field at Daniels Park. A link to live stats is available at CoeAthletics.com.
