JANESVILLE, Wis. - The 35th-ranked Coe College Kohawks fell behind 3-0 after doubles play and couldn't bounce back, as Wisconsin-Whitewater beat Coe 6-3 in the regular season finale.
At number one singles, Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar), ranked 32nd in the nation, beat Grant Thompson 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) for his ninth-straight singles win. Anderson improved to 25-4 in singles on the year, while he is now 7-3 against regionally ranked opponents on the season. Anderson is now tied for 10th in school history with 25 singles wins this season. At number three singles, James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) improved to 18-6 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jimmy Engelhart. Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus), ranked 48th in the nation, was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Matt Zurowski at number five singles as he improved to 22-8 on the year. Bernt moved into a tie for seventh in school history with his 82nd career singles win. The match was the 800th men's match coached by Head Coach Eric Rodgers.
The 35th-ranked Kohawks (23-5, 8-0 IIAC) return to action on Saturday, as they host the Iowa Conference Automatic Qualifier at the Clark Racquet Center. As the top seed, Coe will have a bye into the semifinals. The Kohawks will face the winner of Friday's match between Wartburg and Nebraska Wesleyan. The match will begin at 9 a.m.
