SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After an All-American senior season, Trevor Heitland (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) has been invited to the San Francisco 49ers Rookie Minicamp this weekend.
In his first year at running back, Heitland was named to three All-American teams (D3football.com, AFCA and AP Little All-American). He was also named the runner-up for the Gagliardi Trophy, awarded to the top player in NCAA Division III Football. In addition to the All-American honors, he was named the Iowa Conference Offensive Player of the Year and to the D3football.com All-West Region First Team.
Heitland added his name to the list of some of the best running backs in school history in his senior campaign. Heitland led NCAA Division III in rushing yards (1,913) and carries (317). He ranked third in all NCAA divisions in rushing yards and fourth in carries. His 159.4 rushing yards per game were the second-most in NCAA Division III and the fourth most in all NCAA divisions. He led all NCAA divisions with 223.92 all-purpose yards per game. His 19 touchdowns were the 10th most in NCAA Division III, while he ranked 11th with 114 total points. He set a school record in rushing attempts in a season and all-purpose yards, while ranking second in school history in rushing yards. He finished his career third in pass receptions (149), fifth in receiving yards (1,822), fifth in all-purpose yards (4,397) and 10th in rushing yards (2,084).
Heitland becomes the third known Kohawk running back to spend time in an NFL camp. Carey Bender spent the 1996 season with the Buffalo Bills, while Fred Jackson was with the Buffalo Bills from 2006-2014 and the Seattle Seahawks in 2015.
